Kumpula Leads Beavers On Day One
October 13, 2015 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. –Conner Kumpula shot a pair of sub-par rounds at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in their final tournament of the fall season.
Kumpula, a junior from Albany, Ore., had six birdies and only two bogies in the two rounds at the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club to put him in a tie for 24th place with a 4-under 68-70--138.
The Beavers came out on fire at the two-day, 54-hole tournament, shooting a 10-under 274 in the morning round, before finishing the day with a 1-under 283 to sit in 10th place in the 16-team field with an 11-under 557.
The 10-under score equals the sixth lowest in school history and marks the second straight year the Beavers have shot a 10-under 274 at this event.
The final round will begin at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State starts at 8:30 a.m. on the 10th hole and will be paired with Minnesota, Nevada and UC Davis.
“We were one round away from feeling like we had an okay day,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “I was proud of the way (Chris) Tedesco battled back in the afternoon and the way Calum (Hill) competes. He hit some horrendous shots but finds a way to be able to post solids scores.
“Conner (Kumpula) was really strong today. If he can get a few more putts to fall tomorrow, he isn't too far from having a real low one.
“As a team this will be our last round for a while. We need to make the most of the opportunity to finish the fall on a high note.”
Junior Calum Hill is tied for 29th place with a 3-under 69-70--139 and senior Chris Tedesco bounced back in the afternoon to move 14 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 44th with an even-par 73-69--142.
Junior Kevin Murphy shot a 1-over 69-74--143 for a tie for 49th place and sophomore Jonas Liebich is tied for 62nd with a 4-over 68-78--146.
Cody Blick of San Jose State shot a 13-under 129 to lead three golfers by two strokes and California holds a six-shot lead after posting a 30-under 268-270--538.
