CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 14 Oregon State gymnastics team scored 195.450 in a season-opening loss to No. 5 UCLA Monday evening. The Beavers outscored the Bruins in the second half of the meet but it was too late to pull off the victory, falling 196.00-195.450. Madeline Gardiner finished second in the all-around with a score of 39.250.
“I was pleased with the performances, how they started off and fought all the way through,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “They didn't get caught up in the uncontrollable like the scoring. They did a great job. It's a solid start. We've dealt with a lot of adversity over the last couple weeks with different people getting injured and we've had to put different people in (the lineup). They rose to the occasion tonight, so I couldn't be more pleased with how they started the season.”
The Beavers scored 48.925 to open the season on the vault while the Bruins notched a 49.075 on the vault in the opening session. Erika Aufiero led the squad with a 9.850 while Madeline Gardiner, Megan Jimenez and Taylor Keeker each tallied scores of 9.80.
In the second stanza, OSU posted a 48.800 on the bars with Chelsea Tang and Gardiner each scoring 9.825. Meanwhile, on the vault the Bruins earned a 49.300 to open a wide margin to lead 98.375-97.725 at the midway point.
Oregon State began a comeback in the third rotation with the beam team producing a score of 48.950 including a meet-high 9.875 by Tang as well as a 9.825 from Gardiner. Transfer Risa Perez added a 9.80 in her first routine in the Orange and Black.
Finishing on the floor exercise, the Beavers scored 48.775 led by Gardiner's 9.80. Perez brought the crowd to its feet following her routine and scored a 9.775.
“We can learn from the experience every time we compete,” Tang said. “Now we know what we need to work on in the gym. We'll go in and work on the little details and fix things before we go to Iowa State.”
Oregon State goes on the road next week to face Iowa State Sunday in the Beavers' first of two straight weeks on the road. OSU will also compete at Stanford Jan. 18.
