January 12, 2015 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 11/13 Oregon State women's basketball team completed a season sweep over Oregon and recorded its ninth-straight win over the Ducks with a 77-48 victory Sunday evening in Eugene.
Junior Ruth Hamblin led the way for the Beavers, scoring 23 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field, as she recorded her second 20+ point game this season and the fourth of her career. Hamblin led five Beavers in double-figures, the fifth time this season Oregon State (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) has had at least five players with 10 or more points.
“It was a great effort tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “I think we played 80 minutes of great basketball this weekend, and I'm really proud of what our team brought to the table. I think both teams tried to impose their will early, and Oregon brought a great effort out in the second half, but I thought we did well to withstand that. Overall, we just executed well at both ends of the floor, and I'm really proud of how we played this weekend.”
With the win, Rueck is now 9-1 in the Civil War presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
Junior Deven Hunter made her mark at the forward position, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Freshman Marie Gulich also recorded 10 points in the contest, six of which came on impressive back-to-back three-point plays in the second half. Sophomore Sydney Wiese and senior Ali Gibson also finished with 10 points apiece.
Junior Jamie Weisner led the Beavers with 10 rebounds, helping Oregon State to a 42-39 advantage on the glass. As a team, the Beavers shot 44.6 percent in the contest (29-for-65), compared to 31.8 percent for the Ducks (21-for-66). Oregon State also shot 85.7 percent from the free throw line, their highest percentage of the season.
The teams battled back and forth in the early going, but for the second consecutive game the OSU defense stymied Oregon for an extended stretch midway through the first half. Oregon State held the Ducks off the scoreboard for over seven minutes, parlaying the defensive stand into an 11-0 run as the Beavers took the lead by double-figures. The Beavers would continue to press on from there, taking a 33-16 lead into the intermission.
Hamblin was a force inside in the first 20 minutes, scoring 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
The Beavers would keep things rolling in the second half, stretching the lead to 25 eight minutes into the closing frame. Oregon State would cruise from there, going up by as many as 32 before taking the win by 29 points.
The Beavers return to action on on Friday when they face Washington State at Gill Coliseum.
