January 10, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 11/13 Oregon State women's basketball team notched its eighth-consecutive Civil War win, as the Beavers defeated Oregon 70-37 Friday evening at Gill Coliseum. The game was played in front of a crowd of 7,652, the third-highest total in Oregon State history, and the most since 1996.
“I'm so proud of the effort tonight, I thought it was a great defensive performance,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “That crowd was incredible. Tonight was like a dream come true. We had 7,600 people here, and I told our players they earned every one of them. I couldn't be prouder of our team. I have nothing but respect for Oregon; that's a very good basketball team. I just think we played great defense, and it was a great effort tonight.”
The 37 points conceded by OSU was the lowest total ever given up by the Beavers against Oregon, and with the win, Rueck improves to 8-1 in the Civil War presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
Junior Jamie Weisner led four Beavers in double-figures, finishing three assists short of a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. The double-double was Weisner's second of the season, and the ninth of her career, and the seven assists is a new career-high.
Native Oregonian Samantha Siegner posted one of the best games of her career, shooting 4-for-6 to finish with 11 points and seven rebounds. Fellow junior Deven Hunter also shot 4-for-6, ending the game with 10 points and six boards. Sophomore Gabriella Hanson ended the game with 10 points and three assists.
Junior Ruth Hamblin did her part to fill up the stat-sheet, tallying nine points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. She also made her mark by limiting Oregon standout Jillian Alleyne, who scored six points on 2-for-12 shooting after entering the day averaging 17.1 points per game.
As a team, the Beavers held Oregon to 24.1 percent shooting from the floor, the seventh time this season OSU has held an opponent below 30 percent. Oregon State also out-rebounded the Ducks 55-39
The teams went back and forth for the first five minutes, before Oregon State used a 12-0 run to take the lead 17-6 with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Beavers' defense suffocated the Ducks throughout that stretch, holding Oregon without a bucket for over nine minutes. The Beavers would hold the lead a double figures heading into the break, as Oregon State carried a 33-16 lead into the intermission.
Oregon State continued to extend the advantage in the second half, stretching the lead to 21 less than three minutes into the closing frame. The Beavers would lead by as many as 36, before taking the win by 33.
Oregon State will head down to Eugene for a rematch with the Ducks on Sunday, in a game that will be carried live on Pac-12 Networks.
