Beavers Edged In Opener
May 17, 2014 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Washington snapped Oregon State's 12-game winning streak and assumed a first-place tie in the Pacific-12 Conference title race with a 4-2 victory on Friday in a matchup of top-10 teams at Goss Stadium.
The No. 5-ranked Huskies (38-11-1, 20-5 Pac-12) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and rebuffed several rallies to hand the No. 2-ranked Beavers (39-9, 20-5) their first loss since a 7-6 defeat at Sacramento State on April 21. Washington also ended OSU's 11-game Pac-12 winning streak; OSU hadn't lost a conference game since falling 4-1 at Washington State on April 11.
Washington starter Jared Fisher allowed two runs on five hits through six innings and got the decision as the Huskies won their ninth straight game. Reliever Trevor Dunlap had four strikeouts in the seventh and eighth innings and closer Troy Rallings pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
OSU starter Andrew Moore allowed three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings and took the loss. Washington's final tally, an insurance run in the eighth inning off reliever Brandon Jackson, was unearned.
The Beavers mounted several comeback attempts after falling behind 3-0 but were unable to pull even. They drew within 3-2 in the fifth inning on a single by Gabe Clark, a walk to Logan Ice, a sacrifice and a two-out, two run single by Trever Morrison. Jeff Hendrix followed with a single but the Beavers left runners at the corners.
OSU also had runners at the corners with two outs in the seventh on walks to Michael Howard and Morrison and a balk. However, Dunlap struck out Hendrix to end that threat, and also retired three straight Beavers to strand Andy Peterson in the eighth after he reached second on a leadoff single and throwing error.
Morrison tripled and singled and Peterson singled twice; they were the only Beavers with more than one hit. OSU left six runners on base, five in scoring position.
The season-high crowd of 3,309 raised the season total to 58,462 in 21 openings, an average of 2,784 per date. The Beavers have drawn 2,032 or more fans to every home game, and at least 2,758 to every Pac-12 home game.
Theseries resumes at 4:05 p.m. Saturday at Goss Stadium; Game three is set for 3:05 p.m. Sunday. It is the Beavers' regular-season home finale; they play a non-league contest at Oregon on Tuesday night and then go to Los Angeles for a Friday-Sunday series against USC.
