No. 16 OSU Pushes Past No. 12 Wisconsin in the V8
April 20, 2014 | Men's Rowing
Redwood Shores, Calif. – The No. 16 Oregon State men's rowing team pushed past No. 12 Wisconsin in the Varsity 8, but couldn't top No. 1 California.
"Today's varsity 8 win over Wisconsin was a really gutsy race in tough conditions,” said Head Coach Steve Todd. “But our guys managed to handle the conditions well.”
The Varsity 8 improved on their time from yesterday's race against the University of San Diego, finishing Saturday's two races with a 6:03.3 versus Cal and 6:19.5 against Wisconsin.
"We talked before the race about racing just like the boats namesake, George Dirth,” Todd said. “He was stroke seat and co-captain in 2008, he raced really hard, and that fight was with this crew today."
The Beavs started slow in the Varsity 8, trailing Cal during the morning race. However, the varsity crew was able to come back in the afternoon and perform well in the afternoon against Wisconsin.
Oregon State trailed Wisconsin early in the race, and was down by nearly half a length at the 1000 meter bridge. Moving into a stiff headwind, the Beavs sprinted past the Badgers to win by open water.
Both the Junior Varsity 8 and Freshman 8 crews battled against Cal and Wisconsin and put up a good fight. In the end, they were unable to match the speed of the opposing ranked squads in the tough headwind. The JV8 recorded a 6:18.12 against Cal and a 6:24.8 versus Wisconsin, while the Freshmen boat recorded a 6:35.2 and 6:22.2, respectively.
The Beavs next travel to Seattle to race in the Opening Day Regatta in Seattle, Wash. on May 3.

Day 1 (Friday)
The No. 16 men's rowing team finished the first day of the Stanford Invitational defeating the University of San Diego in the Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8 races, and UC Davis in the Freshman 8 race.
“There was a great effort all around today from our crews,” said Head Coach Steve Todd. “We were trailing off the start in all three races, but came back to win each one.”
The first crew to hit the water was the Varsity 8. Oregon State cruised past the Toreros, recording a final time of 6:20.7, almost 14 seconds faster than San Diego's 6:34.0.
Next up was the Junior Varsity 8 race, where the Beavs also tallied the win. Oregon State recorded a 6:36.5 to San Diego's 6:40.3, claiming the Beavers' second win of the day.
Last on the water was the Freshman 8 crew, closing out the day with another win. The Beavers narrowly slipped past the Aggies, recording a final time of 6:42.0 to UC Davis' 6:51.9.
All three Oregon State crews will take on No. 1 California and No.12 Wisconsin tomorrow on day two of the invite.
"There were challenging conditions today and a strong headwind,” Todd said. “We haven't had conditions like that in a race this year and the guys did a good job of handling it and racing well."
The first race will start tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT in Redwood Shores, Calif. Follow updates and final times at Twitter.com/stanfordmrowing and www.osubeavers.com.
