KAPALUA, Hawai'i. – For the second straight day Seshia Telles led the Oregon State women's golf team at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic, which helped the Beavers knock four strokes off their opening round score and move into eighth place on Tuesday.
Telles shot a 2-over 74 in the second round after opening with a 1-under 71 at the par-72, 6,022-yard Kapalua Bay Course, putting her in sixth place in the 88-player field with a 1-over 145.
As a team, Oregon State shot a 15-over 303 in the second round to move into eight place in the 15-team field with a 34-over 307-303--610. The three-day, 54-hole tournament concludes on Wednesday with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. HT (10:45 a.m. PT). Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
“Today was better overall for our team,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “Unfortunately, we had to finish on two of the most exposed holes on the ocean and the wind won the battle. We will continue to work on those types of shots to eliminate some of the variability of playing in 20 mile-per-hour winds.
“I continue to be pleased with the progress this team is making with their mental toughness. Patience and persistence are the keys in these conditions, and they are learning so much from this experience. Tomorrow we will experience the same conditions and continue to improve and learn. Chipping and putting better will definitely improve our ability to score.”
Junior Anica Yoo made the biggest jump on Tuesday as she carded a solid 3-over 75, which was seven strokes better than the 10-over 82 she opened with in the first round. The round helped her move from a tie for 68th place into a tie for 50th.
Senior Lauren Sewell and sophomore Chelsea Saelee made up the rest of the Beavers' second round score as they each fired a 5-over 77 for the second straight day to put both of them in a tie for 38th with a 10-over 154. Freshman Jesse Hamilton, who is making her Oregon State debut this week, is tied for 71st with an 18-over 82-80--162.
The tournament will come down to two teams, as Pepperdine has the lead with a 1-over 290-287--577 and Washington is second with a 4-over 290-290--580. Grace Na of Pepperdine is running away with the individual crown with an 8-under 136, which is six strokes better than UC Davis's Betty Chen and Washington's Ying Luo, who each sit with a 2-under 142.
