ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.. – Anica Yoo equaled the second-lowest under-par score in Oregon State history when she fired a 3-under 70 in the afternoon round on Friday at the Dick McGuire Invitational to put the Beavers in eighth place through 36 holes.
Yoo carded seven birdies between the ninth and 18th holes, including a stretch of four in a row, which got her to 6-under through 12. She was unable to catch fire again over the final six holes, as she finished with three pars and three bogeys to card her 3-under 70.
Twelve Oregon State golfers have shot a 3-under round, including her teammates Seshia Telles (68 at Stanford Intercollegiate in 2011) and Lauren Sewell (69 at PING/ASU Invitational in 2011). The school record is a 4-under 68 by three golfers -- Andrea Hehn (1997), Leah Whiting (2006) and Martha Burkard (2007).
As a team, the Beavers shot a 21-over 299-306--605 at the par-73, 6,192-yard Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico to sit in eighth place in the 16-team field. The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament is Tuesday.
“We really had it going the first 12 holes of the second 18 today and then the final six holes the wheels came off A bit,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “Anica still finished 3-under despite a bogey-par-bogey finish.
“The team needs to look at what happened and what they can learn from. Being physically and mentally tougher on these long 36-hole days will need to be priority in their practice going forward. I know they can bounce back tomorrow and have a great round.”
Yoo's afternoon round was even more impressive considering she shot a 6-over 79 in the morning. The birdie barrage moved her from a tie for 58th place into a team-best tie for 19th.
Sophomore Chelsea Saelee and senior Lauren Sewell each shot a 6-over 152 with Saelee going 73-79 and Sewell carding 74-78 to put them in a tie for 32nd place. Senior Seshia Telles is tied for 47th after an 8-over 75-79--154 and sophomore Ashlee Pickerell is tied for 56th with an 11-over 77-80--157.
Freshman Krissy Peterson, who is competing as an individual in her Oregon State debut, shot a 13-over 81-78--159 to put her in a tie for 62nd place.
Pepperdine was the only team to finish Monday's 36 holes in red numbers, posting a 3-under 581 to hold the clubhouse lead, while Oregon's Casey Isagawa has the individual lead with an 8-under 138.
Tuesday's final round will have tee times off the first and 10th holes beginning at 8 a.m. MT (7 a.m. PT) and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
