EUGENE, Ore. - Senior left fielder Ashley Sanchez recorded her ninth multi-hit game of the season to lead the Beavers on Saturday during the second game of the annual Civil War series, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, the NW Ford Dealers, McDonald's and Wells Fargo. No. 4 Oregon won the game, 11-0.
Sanchez kick-started the Beavers' attempt to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. After one out, she dropped a double in right center to set the table. Senior Lea Cavestany batted next and sent a ball just inches away from going over the wall in right, but Samantha Pappas brought the ball back to keep the game scoreless.
With Sanchez still at second, sophomore Ya Garcia was hit by a pitch to bring shortstop Elizabeth Santana to the plate. Santana connected and looked to have a two-run double into the gap in left center, but Janie Takeda tracked it down to end the inning.
The momentum shifted to the Ducks (44-7), who hit grand slams in the third and fourth innings to break open the score. The Beavers loaded the bases in the fifth as Sanchez and Cavestany each bounced singles up the middle and Santana walked for the second time. She's now walked 32 times this season, placing her solely in 10th place on the school's single season base on balls list.
Freshman first baseman Natalie Hampton picked up her third hit of the series with a single to right in the fourth. With the game scoreless in the second, Garcia picked a hard-hit short hop to turn a 4-6-3 double play with Santana and Hampton. Today's game broke a streak of five consecutive one-run games for the Beavers in Pac-12 play. That hadn't happened previously in school history. OSU was 4-1 in those five games.
The Beavers (32-19) and Oregon conclude the Civil War with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch tomorrow in a game broadcast by the Pac-12 Networks.
