COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Oregon State softball team scored five runs in the fourth inning after two outs to break open a close game with Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Regionals. Oregon State went on to win, 6-0.
A group of senior proved to be the catalysts for the Beavers' victory. Third baseman Desiree Beltran put the Beavers on the board in the second with her eighth homer of the season, tying a career high. The score stayed that way until the fourth. After the first two hitters of the frame were retired, seniors Ashley Sanchez and Ally Kutz singled to put runners on the corners. Senior right fielder Maggie Doremus worked a walk to load the bases, and senior Lea Cavestany singled to left to make it 2-0.
After sophomore second baseman Ya Garcia was hit by a pitch to force in the third run, senior shortstop Elizabeth Santana doubled into right center to clear the bases for a 6-0 lead.
That would be all senior hurler Marina Demore would need. After allowing a single in the first, she retired the next nine hitters she faced and didn't allow another hit until after the first out of the seventh. For the game, she fanned three batters while facing just three over the minimum.
Garcia reached base all three times she came to the plate, including a double in the first.
The Beavers will turn around and play Hofstra in another elimination game at 3:00 p.m. PDT.
