Beaver boats finish first and second in the JV 8+ and Freshmen 8+, will race in the Grand Final of the Varsity 8+ on Sunday
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Highlighted by first and second place finishes by two of its three boats, the Oregon State men's rowing team capped off a successful first day of competition at the 40th annual San Diego Crew Classic on the waters of Mission Bay.
The highest placing OSU boat Saturday was the JV 8+, which finished in first place of the second heat with a 6:22.05 time, edging out British Columbia who crossed the finish line at 6:24.24. Head Coach Steve Todd's JV8+ boat was led by senior Ty Louis in the stroke seat and sophomore Nick Aerne who rode in bow.
The next best Orange and Black boat performance, Saturday was the Freshmen 8+, who finished in second in the event's third heat with a 6:20.94 time, nearly three seconds behind first place finisher Orange Coast College (6:18.05). OCC led from start to finish, but OSU cut into the Coast's lead during the final 500 meters for the second place finish.
Oregon State's boat in the Varsity 8+ race finished in third place of their second heat with a time of 6:05.21, which was a good enough time to earn them a spot in the events Grand Final, scheduled for Sunday morning in San Diego. OSU finished behind Pennsylvania (5:54.92) and Stanford (5:52.27) in the heat. Riding in stroke for the Beavers' Varsity 8+ boat was junior Brad Buser in the bow seat.
"Goal one for today was to make the Grand Final,” Coach Todd said following competition Saturday morning. “We accomplished that goal, but there is still a lot to work on and improve for tomorrow."
Day No. 2 action gets underway for Oregon State at 9:40 a.m. with the Varsity 8+ Grand Final. Post-race results can be found at crewclassic.com and crewclassic.org.
