CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kinsey Gomez and Emily Weber battled to the finish in a thrilling 1,500, Michele Turney won her third triple jump competition of the season and Kristin Oenning PR'd in the high jump to lead Oregon State in Friday's first-ever OSU High Performance Meet at the program's new Whyte Track and Field Center in Corvallis.
If the Beavers' first home meet in 25 years earlier this season on March 23 was a celebration of how far the program has come since being re-instated, Friday's event showed that OSU can put on a high-quality meet with great fields, efforts and results. Oregon State hopes the meet can fill a void during a weekend when major relays across the country dominate the track and field landscape and believes the event can become a premier destination on the West Coast.
Nearly every time and mark from the facility's first meet just over a month ago was topped, oftentimes in impressive fashion. In the women's 1,500, the Beaver tandem of freshman Emily Weber and sophomore Kinsey Gomez pulled away from the pack and remained neck-and-neck. Weber went out with 400m to go, but was reined in by Gomez, who eventually won in 4:26.89, while Weber crossed in 4:29.46.
"Kinsey and Emily have done nothing but PR in every race this season," Oregon State head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "Kinsey did it indoors twice in the 3K and now every outdoor race has been a PR. Emily Weber, every time she has worn the uniform for us now, she has run a personal best. Running 4:29 for a freshman, at any level, is tremendous, especially when her PR out of high school was 4:43. And Kinsey is just getting better and better. It's obvious."
Gomez, one weekend after solidly putting herself into the NCAA West Regional field in the 5,000, moved into third on OSU's all-time list in the 1,500 with the effort, while Weber slid into the seventh spot. In the same event at Oregon State's home meet on March 23, Gomez ran 4:30.45 and Weber 4:36.24.
Michele Turney, another freshman, won her third triple jump competition of the season. At the first home meet, the Crescent Valley product set the school record with a leap of 39' 0.25". On Friday she jumped 38' to claim victory.
"We're young," Sullivan added. "Morgan Anderson ran great today in the 800 (2:15.35) and we're redshirting her. Michele Turney is a freshman. Sara Almen is only a freshman at 5-11 in the high jump. This is the youngest team we've had since our very first year and I think our future is incredibly bright. Just having this facility has made a huge difference and what it is going to do for us in the future, you can't even put a price tag on it."
While the Beavers' youth shined, the team's upperclassmen weren't to be outdone. On a day that the program's seniors were recognized in a ceremony along with the Whyte family, the facility's lead benefactors, Kristin Oenning PR'd in the high jump in her final home meet.
Oenning topped her previous best in the event by two inches, clearing 5-6.50 on Friday to finish third behind Oregon's Lauren Crockett and Chancey Summers (5-10). Oenning's previous best was 5-4.50 from 2012's Oregon Relays when she also competed against Crockett and Summers. Crockett advanced to the NCAA Championships last year and Summers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Oregon State last hosted Oregon in Corvallis at the 1987 Pac-10 Championships.
