CORVALLIS, Ore. - Matt Boyd limited USC to three runs and five hits while striking out 11 in 8 1/3 innings Friday night to pace the seventh-ranked Beavers to a 10-4 win over the Trojans in front of a season-best 2,934 fans at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers rapped out a season-best 20 hits, lead by Max Gordon, who finished 4-for-5 on the day with two runs driven in. All nine Oregon State batters posted at least one hit, with eight finishing with two or more.
Kavin Keyes tallied three hits and three RBI while Danny Hayes drove in two on the strength of a 2-for-4 afternoon.
Boyd took full advantage of the offensive support.
Boyd allowed solo home runs - in the third to Kevin Swick and ninth to Adam Landecker - in the 8 1/3 innings. He retired 10 straight from the fourth through the seventh, and outside of the home runs, gave up singles in the third, fourth and ninth innings.
The lefty also did not issue a walk for the first time this season and his 11 strikeouts equaled his career-best set earlier this season against Arizona State.
Boyd improved to 8-2 on the year, and is 4-0 at Goss Stadium. In 41 career appearances at home - including six starts - he is 9-1 with a 1.26 earned run average.
"Matt continued to threw very well at home and offensively, we had a great night," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We were balanced all around. Every part of the lineup did well today."
Oregon State scored three runs in both the second and seventh innings and blew the game open with a four-run eighth.
Five hits in the first gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead as Keyes, Gordon and Andy Peterson all drove in runs with singles.
Keyes capped off the Beavers' three-run seventh inning with his second RBI single of the game, scoring Jake Rodriguez. Dylan Davis doubled home the Beavers' first run of the inning and Hayes hit a deep sacrifice fly to left for the second run of the frame.
Hayes, Gordon, Keyes and Michael Conforto all drove in runs
USC's starter, Bob Wheatley, worked six innings but took the loss after allowing 11 hits and three runs. He dropped to 3-3 on the year.
