VALENCIA, Calif. - For the fifth time this season, junior Seshia Telles carded a 2-under 70, this time in the second round of the 2013 Pac-12 Championships on Tuesday, to help the Oregon State women's golf team remain in eighth place with 18 holes to play at the three-day event.
Despite the excellent round by Telles, the Beavers were unable to make up any ground on the 11-team field even though they knocked six strokes off their score from the first day. Oregon State sits in eighth place with a 24-over 303-297--600 at the par-72, 6,300-yard Valencia Country Club, which is six strokes behind Stanford and nine ahead of Colorado.
"We had several solid performances today," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "We are a better team than last year and this experience at Pac-12's will add to the positive base of experience they have. This is the beginning of a successful 2013-14 season for this team. All of these players will be back next year, which is a great plus for our program."
Telles was back to her usual solid play on Tuesday, after opening the Pac-12 Championships with a 6-over 78, as she carded six birdies and four bogeys to climb 25 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 17th place with a 4-over 148. She started on the 10th hole and got to 3-under with birds on the par-4 11th, par-4 13th, par-5 15th, par-5 first and par-4 fourth holes. After back-to-back bogeys on five and six, she ended her day in good fashion with a chirp on the par-5 ninth hole.

The Tualatin, Ore., native has now fired five sub-par rounds this season, and they have all been 2-under 70's. She now has eight in her career with one coming as a freshman and two as a sophomore. Her career-best round is a 3-under 68 last season at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
"Seshia bounced back with an excellent round. She had a great ball striking day and was in position to score well on every hole. Her physical and mental game were on target today. I am proud of her ability to come back with a good performance today."
Sophomore Anica Yoo was rock solid for the second straight day, as she followed up her 2-over 74 with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to put her in sole 16th place with a 3-over 147. After opening the round with a bogey, she got to red figures with birdies at the par-4 13th and par-3 14th holes, and then scrapped back to even-par with another bird at the par-4 fifth before closing with three pars and a bogey.
"Anica remains steady in her performance," Alexander said. "She is striking the ball well and her short game is solid."
Freshman Chelsea Saelee has been consistent at her first Pac-12 Championships with a 3-over 75 on Monday and a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to put her in a tie for 23rd place with a 5-over 149. After starting with a double bogey on the par-4 10th hole, she had a relatively clean scorecard the rest of the way with one birdie, one bogey and 15 pars.
"Chelsea had another good day as well," Alexander said. "She continues to manage her game very well on this golf course."
Junior Lauren Sewell had three holes she'd like to do over after taking doubles on the par-4 11th, par-3 16th and par-4 second. She also had three bogeys and a birdie on Tuesday for an 8-over 80 that dropped her into a tie for 44th with a 12-over 76-80--156.
"Lauren struggled with three double bogies today," Alexander said. "Other than those holes, she was playing well. Tomorrow she needs to make sure her game plan changes on a few holes, and she needs to make sure there are no compounding errors."
Freshman Ashlee Pickerell shot an 8-over 80 for the second straight and sits in a tie for 50th with a 16-over 160. "Ashlee also just had a few high scoring holes and needs to come back tomorrow with a solid round," Alexander said.
No. 1 USC looks to be well on its way to the team title as the Trojans (5-under 571) have an 11-stroke lead over rival UCLA (6-over 582). Annie Park of USC and Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford share the clubhouse lead with a 4-under 140.
The Beavers will begin Wednesday's final round at 8 a.m. off the 10th hole and be paired with Stanford. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
