VALENCIA, Calif. - Anica Yoo led the Oregon State women's golf team with a 2-over 74 in the first round of the 2013 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships on Monday to put the Beavers in a tie for eighth place with intrastate rival Oregon.
Oregon State opened the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 15-over 303 at the par-72, 6,300-yard Valencia Country Club behind a solid 3-over front nine before slipping a bit on the back side. The Beavers are tied with Oregon and only five strokes from moving into the top five with 36 holes to play.
"The team played very well on the front nine with a 3-over par total," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Then on the back nine they played in 12-over. This is a recurring theme and is either that they lose focus due to not taking care of some nutritional details or they lose focus because they are focusing on their score and not the shot they have in front of them. I am inclined to believe it is some of both."
The 11-team field features six teams ranked among the top 15 in the nation, and those teams hold down the top six spots, led by No. 1 USC with a dominant 8-under 280 for a 10-stroke advantage over No. 10 UCLA (2-over 290) and 13-stroke lead on No. 11 Washington (5-over 293).

Yoo started her round in red-hot fashion as she carded birdies on the par-5 first, par-3 third and par-4 fifth holes for a 3-under 33 going out. She was unable to continue the magic on the back nine as she had five bogeys and four pars to finish with a 2-over 74 for a tie for 18th place.
"Anica started off 3-under on the front nine and then ran into some putting issues and most likely that was a loss of focus on the shot itself," Alexander said.
Chelsea Saelee seems to have found her groove at the end of her freshman campaign as she tossed a respectable 3-over 75 on the scorecard for the Beavers' second-best score of the day. She started the round with back-to-back bogeys but settled down to reel off seven straight pars, and then carded birdies on the par-4 13th and par-5 18th holes to put her in a tie for 25th place.
"Chelsea really stayed fairly steady, which is something we are excited about," Alexander said. "She emotionally managed herself and her game very well today."
Junior Lauren Sewell, like Yoo, got off to a hot star with birdies on the par-3 third and par-4 fifth holes, before taking a triple-bogey on the par-4 sixth. She had four bogeys and a bird on the back nine to finish the day with a 4-over 76 for a tie for 30th.
"Lauren also started strong but stumbled on the sixth hole with a triple bogey," Alexander said. "She came back after that but, like many players today, struggled coming in on these fast and undulating greens."
Junior Seshia Telles, the school's all-time leader in scoring average, surprisingly only had one birdie in the opening round, which came on the par-4 sixth hole, and finished with a 6-over 78 to put her in a tie for 42nd place. She responded with a great second round after a tough start in last year's Pac-12 Championship and should do the same on Tuesday.
"Seshia has struggled the last few weeks," Alexander said. "She is hitting the ball well but letting her emotions interfere with what she can truly do on the course. She is our best overall player and hopefully she begins to get out of her own way and play golf they way she is capable of. If that happens this team is in great shape to play well the next couple of days. Seshia has such a significant impact on the team on and off the course. So her leadership in both areas is imperative."
Freshman Ashlee Pickerell was 8-over through 10 holes on Monday but played even-par golf over the final eight holes, with the help of a birdie on the par-4 11th hole, to finish with an 8-over 80 in her first postseason competition.
Only four golfers in the 55-person field shot in red figures in the opening round, led by a sensational 6-under 66 by Sophia Popov of USC. Her teammate, Annie Park, fired a 2-under 70, while Emilie Alonso of Arizona State and Erynne Lee of UCLA each shot a 1-under 71.
The Beavers will begin Tuesday's second round at 9:10 a.m. off the 10th hole and be paired with Colorado and Washington State. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
