BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior pitcher Tina Andreana threw a two-hit shutout to lead the Oregon State softball team to its first win on the road against a top-10 team in exactly six years as the Beavers defeated No. 10 Cal, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
Andreana did not allow a hit until the first batter of the fifth inning, coming on a bloop single to left. By that time, the Beavers had given Andreana all the run support she would need in becoming the first to shut out the Bears this season. In the fourth, senior Ashley Sanchez led off the inning with the first hit for either team in the contest with her infield single to the left side. Two hitters later, Sanchez moved to third when Brianne McGowan.
After Andreana allowed her first hit in the fifth, sophomore second baseman Ya Garcia made a great leaping grab on a flare in shallow right to end the frame. Andreana took care of her own situation in the sixth. After leading off the inning with a hit batsman and a walk, she struck out the next three hitters to squash the threat. Andreana came one strikeout shy of tying her season high with seven.
The Beavers (27-17) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh as they tried to add on insurance. Hampton and third baseman Desiree Beltran singled and junior Hannah Bouska walked after two outs and an injury to Cal starting pitcher Jolene Henderson. Reliever Nisa Ontiveros induced a grounder to second to keep the Beavers off the board.
Still clinging to the 1-0 lead, Andreana walked the tightrope in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position with one out. Andreana got a strikeout for the second out, but a single off Beltran's glove put runners on the corners. Another walk loaded the bases, setting the showdown scene. Andreana won the battle, getting Britt Vonk to ground to Beltran to end the game.
It is Oregon State's first win at a top-10 opponent since defeating then-No. 7 Arizona State, 2-0, on April 21, 2007. It's also the Beavers' first win against Cal since 2009 and first win at Cal since 2008.
The Beavers host Arizona for a three-game series beginning Friday.
