Freshmen 4+'s two first place finishes highlight racing action for Head Coach Steve Todd and his team
LOWELL, Ore. – The No. 19 ranked Oregon State Men's Rowing team completed competition against the top ranked Washington Huskies, Saturday with four second place finishes.
OSU and UW competed against one another in four races during the noon hour on Day No. 1 of the 19th annual Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake in Lowell.
Leading off racing action for the Beavers versus the Huskies was the Freshmen 8+ boat, which came in second with a 6:35.31 time.
The next OSU boat to take to the waters was the JV 8+, which also came in second with a 6:28.41 time, followed by another runner up performance in the Varsity 8+ as Oregon State crossed the finish line at 6:29.72 in that race.
The Varsity 4+ race was the fourth and final one that pitted OSU against their conference foes as the 'Beavs finished second with a time of 7:56.02, close to 15 seconds in front of third place Western Washington and more than 20 seconds faster than fourth place Lewis and Clark. The waters became a bit choppy for the final dual race, making the conditions a challenge for both teams to navigate through.
There were other Orange and Black boats in the water Saturday that were not racing against No. 1 Washington, including the Freshmen 4+ boats which raced earlier in the morning. Both OSU 'A' and 'B' Freshmen 4+ boats took first place in their races, with the 'A' boat crossing the finish line in 7:22.47 and the 'B' boat coming in with a 7:15.50 time. Both boats were nearly 20 seconds faster than the second place finishers in their race.
The second Freshmen 8+ boat also competed in the Covered Bridge Regatta, Saturday and came in first place with a time of 7:19.50, more than 20 seconds ahead of second place Portland State.
Oregon State will next be in the water April 20-21 at the Stanford Invite in Redwood City, Calif.

POST RACE QUOTES
Oregon State Head Coach Steve Todd
On his team's performance…
“Washington is out there again as the number one team in the country, so it was a tough day. Our guys raced fairly well and I thought our start was decent. We were trying to stick in there with the top team in the country but the results were not satisfying and we still have a lot of work to do. It was a step in the right direction though, so we will see what we can do next week.”
On the race conditions…
“The freshmen race had the best conditions, the JV had okay but then it deteriorated a little bit for the Varsity and then by the time the Varsity 4's went in the last race of the day it was treacherous out there.”
On the second Freshmen 8+'s pair of first place finishes…
“The second freshmen guys raced earlier in the day during their event in the covered Bridge Regatta and we had two big wins for them. It's great to see guys that are young and new to the sport really getting their first crack at racing and doing so well. It is just a really good thing to see young guys do that well.”
Senior rower Chad Swenson
On his Varsity 8+ boat's performance versus Washington…
“Going into it, you kind of want to race your own race, go as hard as you can and make sure that we all have one goal in mind. That was to be tired as we possibly could by the finish line because we were racing the top team in the country, so all you can really do is give it your best.”
On the race conditions…
“We had really good conditions the first 500 meters and then once we hit 1,000 meters, a pretty strong headwind picked up. We dealt with it pretty good I thought, picked up the right and moved into the finish.”
