BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior outfielder Lea Cavestany homered three times as the No. 24 Oregon State softball team split a Monday doubleheader matinee at CSU Bakersfield. The Beavers mercy-ruled the Roadrunners, 13-3, in six innings in game one and fell, 10-7, in the second game.
Cavestany also became the third Beaver this season to accumulate four hits in a game to tie the school mark. Her first of the four hits in game one set the table for OSU's first strike against the Roadrunners. She led off the second inning with a double and later scored on an error that allowed catcher Ally Kutz to reach with two outs. After Ya Garcia singled, center fielder Dani Gilmore hit a three-run homer to right center to stake the Beavers to a 4-0 lead. Gilmore had three hits and four RBIs in the first game.
Cavestany hit the first of her two home runs in the third. With first baseman Natalie Hampton on first, she homered to right to match the two runs CSUB scored in the home half of the second. The Beavers scored four more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one away with a run in, Cavestany singled in two more runs to make it 9-2. Kutz's single later in the frame scored Hampton to make it 10-2.
The Roadrunners scored one in the fifth to prolong the game, but OSU piled on with three more in the sixth. Cavestany led off with her second homer of the game. She finished the first game 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Hannah Bouska doubled and scored and Garcia brought home pinch runner Maggie Doremus to round out the scoring. Garcia was 3-for-3. Shortstop Elizabeth Santana also had two hits and scored a run.
Oregon State (23-6) tied its season high with 16 hits, matching the total accumulated against Cal Poly earlier this month and Cal State Fullerton in February. It's also the first time this season OSU hit three homers in a game. Senior Marina Demore won her 16th game of the season, scattering seven hits and three runs across her six innings of work.
In game two, the Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on singles by Gilmore and Santana. Cavestany had an RBI groundout in the inning. The Roadrunners raced ahead with three runs each in the first and second innings.
Oregon State got three of those runs back in the third. After Gilmore and outfielder Ashley Sanchez singled, Cavestany set a new career high with her eighth home run of the season. The Beavers again clawed to within a run in the fifth with Sanchez and Cavestany scoring the runs.
CSU Bakersfield got those two back in its sixth and closed out the 10-7 win in the seventh.
The Beavers head to Tempe to open Pac-12 play with Arizona State. The three-game series begins Thursday. Saturday's series finale will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks beginning at 2:00 p.m.
