TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman pitcher Sarah Shadinger entered her first game as an Oregon State Beaver and left a good impression of what's to come. She struck out nine in the Beavers' nightcap against Creighton, but it wasn't enough as Oregon State fell to the Bluejays, 5-3.
The first three runs of the game were all scored by way of wild pitches. Shadinger gave up the first of those three in the bottom of the first after issuing a leadoff walk. But the Beavers put two on the board in the top of the second by way of wild pitches. Third baseman Ally Kutz, and she didn't need to put the ball in play for both runners to score. Two pitches to the backstop, two runs for OSU.
The scoring went silent until Hannah Bouska led off the top of the fifth inning with the first home run of her career, a bomb to right center to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, though, the Bluejays grabbed the lead after it appeared Shadinger had walked a tightrope. She allowed the first two runners to reach but got the next two out before Creighton catcher Amy Baker hit a three-run homer to left to make it 4-3 Jays. They would add an insurance run in the sixth to close the scoring.
Bouska finished with three hits in four trips while Hampton was 2-for-4. In a fairly small sample of three games, Hampton is hitting .556 with a 1.000 slugging percentage.
The Beavers dropped their opener on Friday to No. 2 Oklahoma, 14-2. Beltran opened the game with a two-run homer in the top of the first, but a big fourth inning for the Sooners turned the tide.
Oregon State has an early wake-up call for Saturday, playing Northwestern at 8:00 a.m. PT and Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. PT.
