PLEASANTON, Calif. - Juniors Seshia Telles and Lauren Sewell each posted top-20 finishes to lead the Oregon State women's golf team to a ninth-place showing at the two-day, 36-hole Cal Classic that ended Tuesday afternoon.
Telles finished in a tie for 14th place with a 5-over 75-74--149 at the par-72, 6,203-yard Ruby Hills Golf Club, while Sewell was two strokes back with a 7-over 78-73--151 to finish in a tie for 18th place.
As a team, the Beavers knocked seven strokes off their opening round on Tuesday to finish in ninth place with a 37-over 310-303--613. Fellow Pac-12 members Stanford and Arizona State took the top two spots with a 10-over 586 and 16-over 592, respectively.
"Today's round was played well with the exception of our fourth and fifth scores," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Seshia began the day 5-over on the first two holes and showed incredible fortitude in coming back to finish the last 16 holes today 3-under par. Ashlee played well also until her final few holes but helped the team score with a 76. Also, Lauren had a solid and consistent round today finishing 1-over.

"What we need now is consistency in the four and five scores to compete for a better finish. Again, this score does not reflect the good ball striking this team is doing. Our short game is the key. I sound like a broken record on the short game stuff. We will keep working on it."
Telles took a snowman on her first hole, the par-4 10th, and could have folded up the tent for the round, but she battled all day to card four birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys the rest of the way to finish with a 2-over 74 and another top-20 finish.
Sewell shot the Beavers' best round of the day, and the tournament, with one of the cleanest scorecards you'll ever see that included one birdie, 15 pars and two bogeys to finish with a 1-over 73. It's the second straight time she's closed a tournament with a 1-over round after shooting a 72 on the final day at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
While Sewell's Tuesday scorecard was relatively clean, sophomore Anica Yoo's was the opposite as it featured plenty of color with four birdies, 10 bogeys, one double and only three pars for an 8-over 80. She still finished third among Oregon State golfers on the individual leaderboard with a 12-over 76-80--156 for a tie for 36th.
Freshman Ashlee Pickerell, competing in just her second tournament for the Beavers after transferring from Tennessee, played much better on Tuesday with a 4-over 76 after opening the tourney with a 9-over 81. The 13-over 157 put her in a tie 41st place, which was eight spots better than her showing at the Peg Barnard Invitational.
Freshman Chelsea Saelee shot a 9-over 81 for the second straight day to finish in a tie for 53rd with an 18-over 162, but she'll always remember the tournament more for the hole-in-one she nailed in the opening round, which came on the par-3 third hole, than her spot on the leaderboard.
The Beavers return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Bruin Wave Invitational, a 54-hole event that includes 15 teams competing at the par-72, 6,131-yard El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.
