CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team defeated Georgia Tech, 9-1, Saturday afternoon to win its 11th consecutive game with a team effort led by senior pitcher Marina Demore, who picked up her fourth win in the five games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic this weekend.
The Beavers (RV, 13-3) scored runs in five of their seven at-bats, but the two runs in the first inning would prove to be all Demore would need. OSU used two Georgia Tech in the inning, the first of which coming on Ashley Sanchez 's sacrifice bunt. The throwing error put runners at second and third for Elizabeth Santana. Her mishandled grounder to short allowed Sanchez and Dani Gilmore to score.
Demore, as she's done all weekend, went to work. The Jackets (RV/RV, 8-7) didn't have a hit reach the outfield until the fifth inning. By that time, the Beavers had built their lead to 5-0.
In the fourth, junior Hannah Bouska came through with a clutch two-out single up the middle to score Lea Cavestany to make it 3-0. Bouska finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk. In the fifth, the Beavers came out hacking as Santana ripped a double to the left-center gap, and freshman Natalie Hampton followed with her fifth home run in the last six games on a blast to right center. Santana had two hits in three trips.
Demore efficiently threw just 88 pitches in contrast to Georgia Tech's Kylie Kleinschmidt, who tossed 141. She struck out three and walked only two in seven innings to move her season record to 9-1. She had help from her defense, as well. With the Beavers ahead just 3-0 in the fourth, an infield hit off Demore's glove caromed to second baseman Ya Garcia. She couldn't get the out at first, but alertly fired home to nail a Georgia Tech runner trying to score from second base on the play.
After the first hit to reach the outfield in the fifth, catcher Ally Kutz erased the would-be base stealer with a bullet on the bag. She also had two hits on the day.
The Beavers tacked on two more runs in each of their final two at-bats. Santana ripped a liner to second in the sixth that was too hot to handle for a two-run single. In the seventh, Bouska added two more RBIs with a double to left center.
The Jackets finally put a run on the board with two outs in the seventh on a single up the middle. They tried to sneak another one home, but Gilmore's throw from center beat the runner by a wide margin.
The Beavers travel to Fullerton, Calif., next weekend for the Easton Invitational. Their first game is Friday morning against Iowa at 9:00 a.m.
