CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jace Fry held No. 11 UCLA to six hits in a complete-game shutout Saturday as the Oregon State baseball team downed the Bruins, 3-0, to even the series at Goss Stadium.
Fry needed just 107 pitches for his first career shutout, the final one going for a strikeout of Trevor Brown to end the game. Fry tossed six strikeouts and walked two, allowing the Bruins to place a runner at third just once.
Fry became the first OSU freshman to throw a complete game shutout since Sam Gaviglio accomplished the feat May 22, 2009 at Stanford, which was a 5-0 Beavers win.
"This was probably the best game I've ever thrown considering the competition and the level I'm at," Fry said after the win.
Ryan Dunn and Tyler Smith each had three hits for the Beavers (25-12 overall, 7-7 Pac-12 Conference) as the club finished with 11 overall, just a day after tallying two in a 4-0 loss to UCLA's Adam Plutko.
Dunn homered in the sixth, his fifth round-tripper of the season, and drove in the game's first run with a double to right center in the third.
Dylan Davis accounted for the Beavers' second run of the game with a 6-3 groundout in the third.
Smith went 3-for-4, singling three times, to regain the league's lead in batting average at .425. The junior now has 17 multi-hit games on the year.
Nick Vander Tuig started and took the loss for UCLA (26-9, 11-6) after allowing eight hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings. He dropped to 4-3 this season.
UCLA's lone runner at third was Beau Amaral, who reached on a single in the sixth. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt and rounded third on an infield single by Cody Keefer but was gunned down at the plate on a throw from second baseman John Tommasini who had blocked the ball from skidding into the outfield.
Oregon State and UCLA finish the three-game series Sunday at Goss Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. PT.
The game can be heard on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com). Mike Parker will call all the action. As always, a live video stream will be available on osubeavers.com.
