CORVALLIS, Ore. – The no. 24 Oregon State softball team fell to the no. 3 Arizona State Sundevils in the second game of the series 3-2 today after resuming play from yesterday in the fifth inning.
The Beavers started the second game yesterday, but only got in five innings before the game was suspended. Oregon State kept the same energy from their win in game one going into the second game and scored to take the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning last night.
Lea Cavestany hit a zinger to the right field and with a combination of errors by Arizona State's right fielder and shortstop, was able to bring in the RBI. The Sundevils tried to answer in the top of the fourth with a long ball out to center field with a runner on third, but Dani Gilmore was there to stop it and keep the Beavers in the lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, both Gilmore and Elizabeth Santana had decent hits at bat, but they were lined out and threw to first for an out.
At the top of the sixth inning this morning, Amber Freeman of Arizona State slammed a homerun to left field bringing in three runs to take the lead 3-1. Desiree Beltran almost had an answer homerun of her own, but it ended up going past the foul line in left field.
The Beavers got a run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a single from Gilmore to make the score 3-2, but was unable to get another runner in and fell to the Sundevils for the second game of the series.
After several rain delays, the third game of the series started, but was only able to get through part of the top of the first inning due to weather conditions. The game was cancelled for the day with the possibility of it being rescheduled at a later date.
The Beavers will return to action this weekend when they face the no. 14 ranked Stanford Cardinal in a three-game series. The first game of the series will be Friday April 13 at 7:00 p.m, with the second game on Saturday and the rubber match of the series on Sunday.
