Ben Wetzler Tosses One-Hitter In Win Over West Virginia

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ben Wetzler allowed just one hit in a seven-inning complete game as the Oregon State baseball team defeated West Virginia, 11-0, Friday in the opening game of the Nike College Showcase at Goss Stadium.
Wetzler's lone hit allowed came on a dribbler to second by Billy Fleming in the third. The West Virginia third baseman narrowly beat the throw from John Tommasini.
Wetzler, a sophomore, picked up his third win of the season after walking one and striking out eight. He threw 94 pitches and is 9-3 lifetime at Oregon State.
The game ended after seven innings due to a 10-run rule. Oregon State capped off its offensive day, which saw the Beavers collect eight hits and seven walks off three West Virginia pitchers, with a seven-run seventh inning for the final tally.
Tyler Smith, Ryan Dunn and Jake Rodriguez all had two hits in the win. Smith and Rodriguez each drove in three to highlight the night.
The Beavers got on the board in the second when Rodriguez drove in Dunn on a 4-3 groundout. Dunn had singled to open the inning, extending his hit streak to seven games in the process.
Oregon State broke open the game in the fifth. Smith drove in the first run on a groundout, then watched as Michael Conforto's two-out double drove in two more.
West Virginia's Corey Walter took the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the year. He allowed six hits and five runs in six innings of work.
The game marked the Beavers' ninth consecutive home-opening win as Oregon State improved to 9-4 on the year. West Virginia, meanwhile, dropped to 6-7 on the year.
The Beavers take on Illinois and Connecticut Saturday. OSU squares off with Illinois at 3:05 p.m. PT followed by UConn at 7:05 p.m. It's the second day of the Nike College Showcase at Goss Stadium.
