LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Dani Gilmore extended her hitting streak to six games and Ya Garcia recorded her first-career Pac-12 hit, but that would be all the Beavers could muster, as No. 14 UCLA used a five-run fifth inning to dispatch Oregon State, 8-0, on Saturday evening at Easton Stadium.
The loss drops OSU's record to 25-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Beavers had a promising start when Gilmore led off the game with a single to right field and UCLA (25-6, 2-0 Pac-12) starter Ally Carda had trouble throwing strikes. She walked Elizabeth Santana and ran the count full on Desiree Beltran, before inducing a double-play grounder to third base that ended the threat.
Garcia would be the only other Oregon State player to get into scoring position in the contest when she began the third with a single through the right side and then stole second.
Oregon State had trouble overcoming the same wildness that chased Carda out of the game in the third inning. UCLA scored its eight runs on only six hits, but was aided by 10 free passes consisting of nine walks and a hit by pitch.
For the most part, the Bruins were held in check through the first couple of innings, scoring twice in the first and once in the third to take a 3-0 lead. But the game ended before a full seven frames when UCLA put up five runs on four hits in the fifth. B.B. Bates singled through the right side with two outs to drive in her team's eighth run and end the game.
The third and final game of the series is set to begin tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
