NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Only two days removed from its Civil War Series victory over then-No. 15 Oregon, the Oregon State softball team picked up right where it left off in a doubleheader at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday afternoon, outscoring the Matadors 18-2, en route to a doubleheader sweep. The Beavers took the first game in five innings, 13-1, and pulled away late in game two, claiming a 5-1 win.
The results push OSU's record to an impressive 25-8 overall, tying the program's most wins in a single season over the last four years. The 25 wins through 33 games also builds on the Beavers' best start to a season since the 2006 team began that year 26-7.
In the sweep, Oregon State exhibited the depth and balance that has become a hallmark of this year's group. In game one, the Beavers scored 13 runs on 13 hits, including putting up a seven spot in the second inning, to get the victory. In the second contest, senior Paige Hall came on to pitch with a 2-1 lead in the first inning and, as she has done all year, proceeded to throw 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball to nab her 11th win of the season.
The opener was seemingly over as soon as it started. Dani Gilmore led off the game with a single, advanced to second on an illegal pitch, stole third and came in to score on a single by Desiree Beltran.
Unsatisfied with leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Beavers came out in the second and ensured the same thing wouldn't happen again. OSU scored seven times on five hits, all after two were out, to balloon its lead to 8-0. In the inning, Hall, Erin Guzy, Ally Kutz, Lea Cavestany and Ya Garcia all drove in runs with singles, with all but Guzy's going right back up the middle.
The Beavers would add four more in the fourth to ensure the game ended before a full seven innings needed to be played and in the process showed that consistency is key. All but one of the team's 13 hits in the contest were singles and nine different players drove in at least one run.
Freshman Aryn Feickert pitched three innings without allowing a run to grab the second win of her career and sophomore Isabelle Batayola singled in the fifth to collect her first career hit.
The game was Oregon State's seventh scoring 10 or more runs this season, which is second in team history, trailing only the 1978 squad that turned the trick 11 times. It was also the Beavers' fifth win this year by 10 or more runs, which ties for the second most in program history and hasn't been accomplished since 1993. The same 1978 team won eight games by at least ten runs.
In game two, Oregon State scored twice in the top of the first, but surrendered one in the bottom half and then relied on the steady arm of Hall for the victory. She came on with two outs in that opening frame and tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two hits, to push her record to 11-1 on the year and lower her ERA to 1.75.
The Beavers broke things open in the seventh inning of that game, pushing across three runs on an RBI double by Cavestany and a two-RBI triple off the bat of Elizabeth Santana. Hall went 2-for-3 at the plate herself and was a combined 4-for-5 in the two games.
OSU will have a day off in Los Angeles before opening up a three-game series at UCLA on Friday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
