CORVALLIS, Ore. - Lea Cavestany went 2-for-2 with one RBI and Tina Andreana didn't allow a hit in the first three innings, but the Oregon State softball team couldn't hold down the arch rival Ducks in the final four frames, eventually dropping an 8-2 decision in what was the Pac-12 opener for both schools.
The Beavers (21-8, 0-1 Pac-12) raced out to a good start against No. 15 Oregon (19-4, 1-0 Pac-12), taking advantage of a pair of errors to claim a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Desiree Beltran reached on a ground ball that was bobbled at third base, advanced to second on a Paige Hall walk and alertly moved up to third one batter later. Erin Guzy smacked a lined shot right at Oregon's second baseman, who tried to double up Hall at first, but instead threw the ball away, handing Beltran the extra 60 feet.
The Beaver junior would come in to score on a groundout by Ally Kutz and Cavestany widened the gap with a two-base liner down the left-field line to score Hall.
Andreana held Oregon hitless the first three innings, striking out two, but a three-run home run off the bat of Kaylan Howard in the fourth put the Ducks on top to stay. They would add two more in the fifth, one in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to ultimately claim the 8-2 victory.
After Kutz was plunked leading off the fifth, Cavestany would single to notch her seventh multi-hit game of the season, good for third on the team. With two on and no outs, Oregon hurler Jessica Moore would settle down and weasel her way out of the jam without allowing a run to thwart the Beavers' best chance to get back in the game.
Oregon State continues its opening Pac-12 weekend against the Ducks tomorrow afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex. First pitch in the Civil War Series presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers and PacificSource Health Plans is slated for 3 p.m.
