FULLERTON, Calif. - Dani Gilmore and Erin Guzy were both 3-for-7 with three RBI, Hannah Bouska extended her hitting streak to 10 games and Paige Hall recorded the save in both contests, as the Oregon State softball team swept matchups against Indiana, 4-3, and Northwestern, 5-3, on the first day of the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday night.
The victories extend the Beavers' winning streak to seven games and give OSU a 15-4 overall mark on the season. It's the first time Oregon State has been 10 games over .500 since 2007.
The tournament began with another strong outing from Marina Demore, who got the start in the first game against Indiana and gave up three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings to notch her sixth victory of the season. Before surrendering a series of scores in the seventh, the junior pitcher had gone 23 straight innings without allowing a run. As a team, OSU had gone 24 1/3 without allowing an opponent to cross the dish.
Demore was able to go right after the Hoosier hitters after being staked to an early 3-0 lead. Gilmore led off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt hit from Bouska and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Desiree Beltran.
In the second, Ally Kutz singled to left, Lea Cavestany did the same, the duo was advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Ya Garcia and Gilmore drove both in with a single to right field to put OSU on top, 3-0.
In the fifth, Gilmore widened the advantage, sending a shot deep into the Fullerton night for a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead.
Indiana would break through for three runs in the seventh before Hall would come in, throw five pitches and induce a fly ball to center field to end the game.
In the nightcap against Northwestern, Tina Andreana was the beneficiary of some more early offense from the Beaver lineup. OSU scored a run in the second inning on a bases loaded walk by Kutz and added three more in the third when Guzy singled through the middle with the bases juiced to score a pair and Kutz drove in another on a sacrifice fly. Guzy again came to the rescue in the fourth when she doubled into the gap in right-center field to allow Bouska to score and give Oregon State a 5-0 lead.
Andreana tossed 5 1/3 without giving up an earned run and striking out seven. She escaped a bases loaded jam in the third by catching Northwestern's fourth batter looking at strike three and then set down all three outs in the next frame with successive strikeouts.
After the Wildcats scored three unearned runs in the sixth, Hall came on again and lasted the final 1 2/3 innings to secure the save. Her two saves on the night are her first two of the season. She came into the tournament with only a pair of saves in 133 career appearances.
Oregon State will play one more Big Ten opponent tomorrow, Michigan State, at 1:30 p.m. before taking on host Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m.
