SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team continued to produce offensive fireworks and Marina Demore and Aryn Feickert combined to throw the team's first shutout of the season as the Beavers split a pair of games on the first day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego. OSU downed UCSB, 6-0, in the early afternoon then dropped a 7-6 nail-biter in nine innings to co-host SDSU late on Friday night.
"We learned a lot about our team today," Oregon State head coach Kirk Walker said. "Marina and Aryn threw the ball incredibly well against the Gauchos and I was extremely pleased with the way we fought in extra innings against a good team on the road."
In the early afternoon, Oregon State's (4-3) hurlers quieted UCSB with relative ease, not allowing a single runner past second base. Demore started the game and gave up four hits in five innings before giving way to Feickert, making her collegiate debut, who threw two innings of scoreless ball, including her first career strikeout.
Hannah Bouska, Elizabeth Santana and Lea Cavestany all had two hits for the Beavers, who used a two-run third and a three-run fourth to put the game to rest. Bouska highlighted the action in the field with what was arguably the best defensive play of the season to-date. After a leadoff single, a Gaucho runner attempted to advance two bases on a ball down the line in right field, until the sophomore cut off the hit and uncorked a rocket to Desiree Beltran at third to cut down the runner and stymie any UCSB momentum.
The 6-0 final was Oregon State's widest margin of victory in a shutout since an 8-0 win over Weber State in March of last year.
In the nightcap, the Beavers hit at least three home runs for the second time this season and Tina Andreana struck out a career-high 11 batters in nine innings of work, but San Diego State eked out a narrow 7-6 decision.
Dani Gimore led off the game with a home run to straightaway center field, her second of the season, and was joined rounding the bases a bit later by Desiree Beltran, who smacked a solo shot in the fourth.
With the score tied, 4-4, after eight innings, the Aztecs took a three-run lead in the ninth. In the bottom half, Erin Guzy hit a frozen rope over the right field wall to score two and pull OSU to within one, but that's as close as it would get. The homer combined with her RBI double from the second inning gave the starting first baseman a 2-for-4 night with three RBI. The trio of runs driven in for Guzy tied her career high set on March 30, 2008 against Washington.
There's no rest for the weary in San Diego, as the Beavers have a quick turnaround and will take on Notre Dame at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning before facing off against San Diego later in the afternoon.
