Corvallis, Ore. (AP) – Sophomore Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) led all Oregon State (17-8, 8-6 Pac-12) players with 11, but the Beavers fell to No. 3 Stanford (23-1, 14-0 Pac-12), 78-45, on Thursday evening in Gill Coliseum.
“Their defense was really good tonight so first off, congrats to them for clinching their 12th straight conference title tonight,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “There was an awesome crowd, and I was really impressed with how many people came out to support us, and it gave us a great home atmosphere.
But Stanford did a great job of defending us. They played us perfectly to start and nothing was easy. We didn't hit a few of the shots that I thought we needed to hit early in the game to get ourselves relaxed. That was key. We wanted to win the first four minutes and tonight we didn't. I thought that Stanford executed well all night.”
Both teams struggled early on offense with Martin picking up the first five points for the Beavers. But Stanford shot 47.5 percent on the game and 83.3 percent from the line to lead the entire game.
Junior Thais Pinto (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) tied for the most points off the bench with nine, including two three-point play opportunities, while junior Quortni Fambro (Decatur, Ga.) had seven points in nine minutes played.
Senior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) scored all eight of her points in the second half, adding a team-high five assists and two steals.
Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike led all scorers with 27 points, while Joslyn Tinkle had 14 points.
Oregon State closes out its home slate of the 2011-12 season on Saturday against California at 2:00 p.m. Saturday's contest is the Beavers' Pink Out game, and fans can purchase pink t-shirts before Friday's gymnastics meet or in Gill Coliseum for $12 for free admission into Saturday's game.
Also, Saturday is Senior Day, and senior Earlysia Marchbanks will be honored before the game.
Oregon State Notes:
- Junior Patricia Bright is now tied for second for the most blocked shots in a single season with one in the game, 85 on the season.
- Sophomore Alyssa Martin reached double-figures for the eighth time this season with 11 points.
