Pillari claims two first place finishes as coxswain while Sumner leads his boats to a pair of second place performances
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State men's crew team had a strong showing Sunday during the Portland Fall Classic as the Beavers swept first and second place in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races.
Led by coxswain EmilyAnne Pillari, the 'A' boat finished first in the Varsity 8+ with a time of 16:03.52. Not too far behind the 'A' team's pace was the 'B' boat which placed second in the same event with a time of 16:17.21. That boat was coxed by Eric Sumner as both OSU teams finished at least a minute faster than its four other competitors in the event.
Next up for the Beavers was the Varsity 4+ and the two Orange and Black boats in the water during that event took their cues from the 8's who raced earlier in the morning. This time the 'B' boat also led by Pillari as coxswain stole the show and finished first with a time of 17:33.99. The 'A' team came in second led by Sumner. The 'A' boat finished with a time of 17:43.62, followed by coxswain Sam Callen's 'C' boat (18:15.18) and Evan Clark's 'D' boat which finished fourth with a time of 18:35.17
Following their pair of first and second place finishes, head coach Steve Todd's crew will next head to Seattle where they will take part in the Head of the Lake Regatta, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4.
POST RACE QUOTES
OSU Head Coach Steve Todd
On his team's performance…
"The Portland Fall Classic went really well for us this morning. The challenge was for each crew to push their limits and see what they could as a boat."
On the race's lineups…
"We set up the races with even lineups in the two Varsity 8's; the guys were eager to race each other and show who was faster. In the 4's race we set two pairs of essentially level 4's and it added a little intrasquad competition."
On moving forward…
"Today was a step in the right direction because we raised the level from our Head of the Charles race. Next step is to compete well and finish off the fall with a strong showing in Seattle next week."
