Women's Golf Concludes Fall Season With Another Top-10 Finish

STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon State women's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a tie for eighth place in a highly-competitive field and junior Lauren Sewell had a career-best finish with a tie for third at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole event with a 27-over 287-290-302--879 at the par-71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course and finished ahead of seven teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation in a field that included six top-10 teams.
"We started off fairly well today, but the team only had a couple of rough holes," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Seshia and Anica didn't respond very well to having a couple of bad shots, and they pretty much got down on themselves. After that, they didn't manage their emotions very well for the first three holes which affected them. I made it a priority to talk with each other after the front nine, and they really played the back nine much better. Lauren and Chelsea went out and stayed in the same state of mind as they did the first two days. Both women played very well, and you can see that with Lauren finishing tied for third place."

Oregon State ends a very successful fall campaign with top-10 finishes in all four events, including a second-place showing at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore., and a fourth-place finish at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis. The Beavers will take a lot of positive momentum into their spring season that begins in February at the UCF Challenge in Florida.
"I feel that this was a significant breakthrough for us, as far as being able to compete to win a conference championship," Alexander said. The team needs to understand and believe in that, and I encourage the girls to hold their heads high. The women will need to keep this momentum going and have a great offseason so we can get more mentally tough."
Sewell was steady all three rounds, finishing with nine birdies en route to a 1-under 71-70-71--212 to equal the third-lowest under-par score in Oregon State history. It's just the fourth-ever sub-par finish by a Beaver and second this fall after Seshia Telles shot a 2-under 214 at the Oregon State Invitational.
Oregon State All-Time Low Individual Three-Round Scores
213 (-3) -- Kathleen Takaishi (Wahine Classic, Fall 1998)
214 (-2) -- Seshia Telles (Oregon State Invitational, Fall 2012)
212 (-1) -- Lauren Sewell (Stanford Intercollegiate, Fall 2012)
215 (-1) -- Whitney French (Rose City Collegiate, Fall 2010)
The tie for third place is a career best for Sewell, bettering the tie for sixth she had at this year's Oregon State Invitational, and is her fourth career top-10 finish. Her previous best three-round score was a 3-over 216 at last year's Stanford Intercollegiate.
"Today went really well and tying for third felt great," Sewell said. "I just tried to play consistent and stay in the moment, and that helped a lot with my golf game. I focused a lot on keeping my emotions level throughout my play. In previous tournaments I was getting pretty down on myself and getting upset when I was not playing great.
"During the offseason I will continue to work on staying in shape and working on a couple of different swings that I can work on. During the last tournament Coach Risë noticed a couple different things about my swing, so we are going to continue to work on that and keep it consistent."
Freshman Chelsea Saelee also recorded a career-best three-round score and finish with a 3-over 71-72-73--216 for a tie for 12th place. She had 10 birdies in the three rounds and has been a regular contributor to the Beavers' team score in all four tournaments this fall. Her previous best was a 17-over 233 at the Rose City Collegiate when she finished in a tie for 22nd.
Sophomore Anica Yoo finished in a tie for 62nd with a 14-over 73-75-79--227 and senior Rachael Fischer bounced back after a tough first round to finish with a 33-over 88-79-79--246. Junior Seshia Telles was tied for 20th entering the final round but signed a scorecard that had a wrong score listed and had her third round disqualified.
"Seshia didn't check her scorecard properly and signed for a lower score on the eighth hole," Alexander said. "It hurt Seshia more than the team's overall score since we had three 79's today. We still tied UCLA and beat UC Davis by one and beat seven teams ranked ahead of us. The biggest accomplishment was beating Oregon so that was great."
