OSU trailed for nearly 50-minutes but tied it in the 84th to send the contest to overtime
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sparked by junior Erin Uchacz's goal in the 84th minute, the Oregon State women's soccer team took Arizona State to double-overtime and earned a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field. Uchacz's score broke a 50 minute window where the Beavers were down by a goal and was enough to send the match to overtime. OSU now stands at 10-4-2 on the year and 2-3-2 in the Pac-12, while the split moves ASU to 6-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 within the conference.
During the two schools' 110-minute battle both teams would combine for a total of 34 shots on the day, with OSU claiming 20 of those kicks. The one that mattered for the Beavers came at the 83:39 mark from Uchacz, who took a pass from Brandi Dawson at the top of the box and powered into the left corner of the goal passed Sun Devil keeper Chandler Morris. The goal was the junior midfielder's second of the season and gave Dawson her third assist of 2012.
Arizona State scored its lone goal in the first half, when during the 34th minute defender McKenzie Berryhill headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick which went past Sammy Jo Prudhomme. It was only the 10th score the OSU freshman had given up this season, compared with her 61 total saves, six of which she stopped versus ASU.
Prudhomme's most spectacular save of the day came in the final minute of regulation, when Sun Devil forward Devin Marshall fired one straight at her but Prudhomme put her hands up and deflected it away. The rebound went back to Marshall who sent another shot toward the OSU goal but the ball hit the crossbar, ensuring that these two schools would need extra time to decide a winner.
After 20 more minutes of play neither team was able to put a goal into the net, with Prudhomme and Morris each making one save in the overtime periods. As the horn sounded at the 110th minute, the Beavers earned their second tie in their last three matches.
Leading the way in the shot department for Linus Rhode's crew was junior forward Jenna Richardson who fired off a half dozen total, with two going on goal. Junior midfielder Jacy Drobney added four of her own, one of which went toward Morris' way.
Oregon State now has a day to rest before its senior day matchup with Arizona, Sunday at Lorenz Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:05 p.m., but fans are asked to be in their seats by 11:45 a.m. for the start of the ceremony as OSU bids farewell to seniors Katie Gleffe, Justyne Freud, Lindsay Meiggs, Megan Miller and Claire Pflueger. The team will also sign autographs for fans following the contest.
POST MATCH QUOTES
OSU Head Coach Linus Rhode
On tying the Sun Devils…
“I think from the second half on we controlled the game and were putting a lot of pressure on them (Arizona State), so to come away with a tie is something that we can deal with. It is unfortunate because we had some really good chances to get a win but at the end of the day it is not going to hurt any of our chances to achieve our postseason goals.”
On Erin Uchacz's match tying goal in the 84th minute…
“It was a fantastic shot and as soon as it left her foot I thought, 'Oh my god this is going in'. It was a world class shot and was one of the best individual efforts that we've seen from our players (this season). She just had full confidence and smacked it which was awesome.”
On the play of freshman goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme…
“Sammy Jo was outstanding and she made some critical saves at critical times. She is just so confident as a freshman and I think she helps some of the other players in front of her be confident as well.”
Junior midfielder Erin Uchacz
On her match tying goal…
“Brandi (Dawson) just did a good job of finding me open at the top of the box and the (Arizona State) defenders were just in good places for me to get a shot.”
On the play of goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme…
“Sammy is a phenomenal goalie so as bad as it is to say, I kind of expect her to make those (hard) saves just because she is so good. If she is making the saves I think it just makes us realize okay, she is doing her job, we need to score and do our job.”
Freshman goalie Sammy Jo Prudhomme
On earning a tie with ASU…
“We are obviously disappointed coming out with a tie especially after having some really good opportunities after her (Erin Uchaz's) goal, but we'll take it. The fact that we were able to come back and get a goal the way Erin shot that (ball) was pretty cool.”
On the last few shots that came her way at the end of regulation…
“It was definitely a good chance and I saw her (ASU's Devin Marshall) coming the whole time but we were outnumbered so there wasn't anything we could really do about it. Morgan (Kennedy) had to cover one girl from the left and then there was a girl open on the right and they played a good ball to her so I just came out, held my ground and she shot it. I saved it and then she got a weird chip on it and it hit the bar.”
