STANFORD, Calif. - Competing in a field that includes 15 teams ranked in the top 50, including six in the top 10, the Oregon State women's golf team shot an impressive 3-over 287 on Friday to sit in second place after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.
The Beavers started the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament on the 10th hole at the par-71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course and took the lead through nine holes with a 2-under 142. They shot a 5-over 145 over the final nine holes and are just one stroke behind clubhouse leader USC, which shot a 2-over 286.
The 3-over 287 equals the fifth-best round in Oregon State history with the school record being a 2-under 282 that was shot at last year's Stanford Intercollegiate.
There are still 36 holes left to be played, and the 17-team field includes the top four teams in the nation, but the Beavers will go for their first title since winning the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis and their first outside Oregon since claiming the 1998 Jeannine McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
The second round begins with an 8:30 tee time on Saturday and the final round will be played on Sunday. Live scoring for both rounds is available at golfstat.com.

"The most significant thing I saw today in our play was more productive course management and a greater sense of focusing on one shot at a time," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Lauren, Seshia, Anica and Chelsea definitely seemed more present centered than I've seen them in a while. We have been working on this. The test is to continue to do this on a regular basis. The team played within themselves and used their strengths to their advantage. We look forward to playing alongside USC and Vanderbilt tomorrow and continuing to improve our focus."
Junior Lauren Sewell equaled her season best with an even-par 71 that included four birdies, two bogeys and a double and is tied for 10th overall. She got to 2 under on two separate occasions and was close to posting the fourth sub-par round of her career.
Freshman Chelsea Saelee had a team-best five birdies to post her best career round as a Beaver with an even-par 71 and is also tied for 10th. She has competed in every tournament this season and her previous best round was a 3-over 75 in her collegiate debut at the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
Junior Seshia Telles was 3 under through 13 holes but took two bogeys and a double over the final five to finish with a 1-over 72. She is tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard and looks to continue her streak of carding a 2-under round in all three tournaments this fall.
Sophomore Anica Yoo grinded all day with 14 pars, three bogies and a birdie on her 16th hole of the day, the par-5 seventh, to shoot a 2-over 73 for a tie for 25th. It's her best round since the season-opening Oregon State Invitational where she carded a 1-under 71 and a pair of 2-over 74's.
USC and Oregon State hold down the top two spots, while Vanderbilt is third with a 4-over 288, and Stanford and Vanderbilt are tied for fourth with a 5-over 289. Doris Chen of USC, Cassy Isagawa of Oregon and Josephine Janson of Oklahoma State share the individual lead with a 2-under 69.
