TUCSON, Ariz. -
The No. 4 Oregon State gymnastics team beat No. 13 Arizona on the road Friday night 194.825-194.375. Senior All-American Leslie Mak scored 39.400 in the all-around for the second straight week and performed a near-perfect routine on the beam to match her career-high with a 9.95.
“This was not our best performance,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “It's better that this happened now rather than later in the season. We'll need to learn a lesson from this, get back in the gym and work hard to be better next week against Stanford.”
Beginning the meet on the uneven bars, Hannah Casey opened the scoring for the Beavers with a career-best 9.825. Casey's teammates followed with a series of stuck dismounts from OSU's first five routines. Brittany Harris tallied a career-high tying 9.850 while Makayla Stambaugh and Leslie Mak added scores of 9.825 and Olivia Vivian finished with a 9.80.
Heading into the second rotation, the Beavers held a comfortable lead of 49.125-48.725. Oregon State hit all six of its vaults in the second stanza but with the judges looking hard for stuck landings, the Beavers tallied a team score of 48.775. Harris provided the highlight of the event with just a slight hop and score 9.825 to lead the way in the anchor spot. The Beavers steadily built the scores with scores of 9.70, 9.725, 9.750 and 9.775 from Tang, Stambaugh, Kelsi Blalock and Mak respectively.
After stretching the lead to 97.900-97.050 in the second rotation, the Beavers hit six more routines. Blalock started things for OSU with a strong routine and a score of 9.725. Harris followed with big tumbling and showed her personality scoring 9.750. Tang, who was inserted into the lineup following the three-minute touch period, scored 9.625 in her first collegiate floor routine. Melanie Jones performed an outstanding routine to earn a score of 9.85 and Mak matched the score moments later. Stambaugh finished the rotation with a solid routine and a score of 9.775 to give the Beavers a team score of 48.950.
Oregon State held a commanding lead heading into the final rotation 146.850-145.600. But the beam team struggled first with wobbles then with back-to-back falls. However, the end of the end of the lineup picked it up with Vivian performing a nice routine to score 9.80 and Mak finished the scoring with a near-perfect performance and a score of 9.95.
The Beavers return to Corvallis to face No. 14 Stanford next Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets early to avoid waiting in line. The Gill Coliseum box office will open at 5 p.m. on the night of the meet and the doors will open at 6 p.m.
