Baseball's Season Ends With Loss At Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Parker Berberet drove in two but the Oregon State baseball team saw its 2011 season come to an end with a 9-3 loss to Vanderbilt Saturday night at Hawkins Field.
Berberet singled home a run in the first and drove the second of the Beavers' offensive output in on a sac fly in the third, adding to his team-leading RBI total, which will end the year at 39. However, his two RBI were not enough as the Commodores scored multiple runs in both the first and sixth innings to capture the Super Regional championship and advance to the College World Series.
Ben Wetzler made his first start since Pacific-10 Conference play and limited Vanderbilt to just five hits and two runs in four innings while striking out five. He left at the start of the fifth as the Beavers held a 2-2 tie, but Vanderbilt managed to score four runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings off reliever Scott Schultz to take the lead for good.
Schultz took the loss to drop to 4-1 this season.
Aaron Westlake paced the Vanderbilt offense with three home runs - one in the first, another in the sixth and his final in the eighth - as the club finished with sss hits overall. Westlake had six of Vanderbilt's nine RBI.
Anthony Gomez went 4-for-6 with two RBI in the win.
The game was an early seesaw battle, with Vanderbilt taking a 2-0 lead in the first when Westlake hit his 15th home run of the season, a two-run shot. But the Beavers answered with solo runs in both the first and third innings; Berberet singled home a run in the first, then drove a sacrifice fly to right in the third to tie the game.
Vanderbilt, however, took the lead with a bloop fielder's choice to left by Jason Esposito that scored Gomez. The Commodores then gave themselves some cushion with a two-run single by Gomez that scored runners from second and third.
Vanderbilt ended the sixth with four runs after Westlake connected with his second two-run home run of the game after Matt Boyd replaced Schultz.
Carter Bell hit a solo shot in the eighth - his second of the season - to give the game its final 9-3 score.
Grayson Garvin made the start for Vanderbilt and allowed six hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings. However, he did not go the required distance for the win. That instead went to reliever Will Clinard, who picked up his second victory of the year to improve to 2-2.
The win advanced Vanderbilt (52-10 overall) to the College World Series, which starts June 18 in Omaha, Neb. Oregon State saw its season come to an end with the loss, dropping to 41-19 on the year.
