CORVALLIS, Ore. - The third-ranked Oregon State baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 21 California Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
The split pushes the Beavers to 33-11 overall and 13-4 in Pacific-10 Conference play, which puts Oregon State in a half-game lead for the league's title.
California, meanwhile, is 28-15 overall and 12-8 in Pac-10 play, which puts the Golden Bears at 2 ½ games back of first place.
The teams play the rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. PT.
Game 1 Recap
Sam Gaviglio struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings and Brian Stamps gave the Beavers breathing room with a two-run double in the seventh as OSU took game one, 3-0.
The Beavers took the win despite a two-hit effort from California starter Erik Johnson, who dropped to 5-2 this season. He allowed three runs and struck out nine with six strikeouts.
Gaviglio improved to 9-1 in 2011 after reaching double figures in strikeouts for the fourth time this season. He scattered five hits in the win.
Parker Berberet drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, driving in Kavin Keyes who had been hit by a pitch.
Carter Bell singled in the seventh to break up a no-hit bid by Johnson, and he and Tyler Smith scored when Stamps hit the left field wall for a two-run double.
Matt Boyd came in the seventh with runners on second and third and one out and forced Cal to leave the bases loaded after an intentional walk. Boyd worked two scoreless innings.
Tony Bryant came on with two outs in the ninth and picked up his eighth save of the season.
Tony Renda had two hits to pace California, which finished with nine overall.
Game 2 Recap
Carter Bell homered and Kavin Keyes went 2-for-3 but the Beavers dropped game two, 6-2.
Justin Jones scattered six hits and two runs over nine innings to get the win for California, improving to 6-4 this season.
Josh Osich, meanwhile, fell to 6-2 on the year after allowing six hits and four runs over six innings.
Keyes opened the game's scoring with an RBI single in the second, but saw the Golden Bears take the lead with a three-run fifth. Renda highlighted the inning with a two-run home run.
Bell's home run came in the seventh and marked his first of the season, but the Golden Bears, up 4-1 prior to the solo home run, scored two runs in the eighth for the final 6-2 advantage.
Mitch Delfino, Chad Bunting and Austin Booker all had two hits for the Golden Bears.
Oregon State and California conclude their series Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. PT.
