CORVALLIS - The Oregon State softball team dropped the opening game of the three-game "Strike Out Cancer" set against No.7 California Friday afternoon by a score of 9-0 in six innings.
In less than ideal weather conditions, Oregon State starting pitcher Tina Andreana took the ball for her fourth consecutive Pac-10 Conference game start. She has started 12 of the 16 conference games for the Beavers this season.
After getting the first two batters out in the top of the first inning, Andreana walked the third batter and then hit the next to put two runners on base with two outs. She then struck out the fifth batter of the inning to end the top of the first.
Oregon State could not get things started in the bottom of the first and neither team could do anything in the second as the game went to the top of the third in a scoreless tie.
California (35-9 overall, 11-5 Pac-10) broke the tie in the third with three runs on four hits, all singles to take a 3-0 lead.
Nikki Chandler led off the bottom of the third with an eight pitch walk. Maggie Doremus attempted to sacrifice Chandler to second but reached on an excellently placed bunt single getting two runners on base with no outs. The Beavers (18-23, 1-15) could not get that one hit to get into the game and stranded both runners in the inning.
Andreana held the Bears in the fourth and Desiree Beltran got one of her two hits in the game in the bottom of the fourth. She added another single in the sixth and reached base in all three of her at-bats during the game going 2-for-2 from the plate and was also hit by a pitch. She has been hit 12 times this season which is third most in the conference.
After the Bears got a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, Andreana was relieved by Paige Hall who gave up a two-run home run on the first pitch she threw. The Bears added another run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
Andreana went four complete innings giving up five earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking four. She fell to 5-13 with the loss.
Hall pitched just 1/3 of an inning and gave up two earned runs on three hits before being relieved by Marina Demore who closed out the game for the Beavers. Demore pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two runs on one hit.
Oregon State got a runner on base in the bottom of the fifth after a Chandler bunt single but a double-play groundout ended the inning for the Beavers.
California added two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-0 lead which would be the final margin with the game ending following the sixth inning.
Bears' starting pitcher Jolene Henderson pitched a complete game shutout and allowed four hits in the game while striking out seven to improve to 31-6 on the season.
The two teams will be back on the field tomorrow for the second game of the three-game set with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. at the Oregon State softball complex.
