No. 2 Beavers Fall To Trojans In Saturday Affair

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andrew Susac went 3-for-4 and James Nygren allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings but an eight-run first inning by USC doomed the second-ranked Oregon State baseball team in a 8-3 loss to the Trojans Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Susac singled three times to pace the Beavers offensively, who tallied 11 hits off two USC pitchers but left nine on base in falling to 38-13 overall and 17-6 in the Pacific-10 Conference this season. USC, meanwhile, improved to 21-29 overall and 11-12 in league play.
The Trojans posted an eight-run first for all the runs they'd need in the win. USC sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and got out to a 5-0 lead before the Beavers managed to record an out.
Ben Wetzler started for the Beavers and was touched for six hits and seven runs in 1/3 of an inning. He took the loss to drop to 6-3 this season.
Nygren came on in relief of Wetzler and held the Trojans to just a run over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out two while throwing 83 pitches.
Austin Wood started for USC and went eight full innings to improve to 5-6 this season. He allowed 10 hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
Brian Stamps also had two hits in the loss, while every USC starter recorded at least one hit. Alex Sherrod had three hits to pace the Trojans.
Oregon State and USC conclude their three-game series Sunday at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PT. Prior to the game, OSU will honor six seniors and former Beaver right-hander Jonah Nickerson will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
