SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Oregon State men's rowing team finished the San Diego Crew Classic with tightly contested races on Mission Bay Sunday.
The races ended with the Beavers in fourth place in both the Copley Cup for the Varsity 8 crews, as well as the Junior Varsity 8+ competition for the Sharp Cabrillo Cup. The Freshman 8+ added a third place finish in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup.
The V8+ had a shaky start and trailed off the line of the Copley Cup Grand Final. California and Stanford quickly separated from the field leaving Oregon State in a tight race for third with Michigan, Temple and UC San Diego. The OSU crew moved well through the middle thousand meters and was able to row through Temple and UCSD. A strong sprint by the Beavers and were able to close on Michigan but came up just short in their bid for third.
“The Varsity didn't position itself well at the start,” head coach Steve Todd said. “They remedied that with a better middle piece but the guys just gave too much away early on to move back on Michigan.”
The JV8+ crew battled to a fourth place finish in the Sharp Cabrillo Cup. The JV race played out in similar fashion as the Varsity with a slow start. But an aggressive middle portion of the race pressed Oregon State back into the Stanford and Cal 'B' boats in the third 500-meters.
“The JV crew wanted to race with more composure today. They made a good change from Saturday and were able to make an aggressive push into the pack to challenge for third today.”
Frustrated by the weather conditions Saturday, the F8+ rowed a much better race today in calmer conditions. The F8+ raced a composed, strong first half of the race before attacking the final piece. The furious spring brought the Beavers from a full length down on Orange Coast College to nearly even before they finished three-tenths of a second behind the third-place boat.
“It was great for the freshmen to put on such a spring. They really challenged Orange Coast and I think that the guys learned a lot about what big time collegiate racing is about.”
Oregon State hosts Washington in their only home dual regatta of the year next Saturday, April 9. The race will be held at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore.
