TEMPE, Ariz. - Tina Andreana threw a three-hit gem but the Oregon State softball team fell 1-0 to No. 1 Arizona State Friday night at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. in front of a crowd of 1,918.
Lea Cavestany lead off the game for the Beavers (18-20 overall, 1-12 Pacific-10 Conference) in the top of the first with a base hit to left field and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Sanchez but was stranded at second.
Arizona State (43-5, 10-3) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning with a bases loaded walk but Oregon State starting pitcher Tina Andreana induced a fly ball to Cavestany in center to end the threat in the bottom of the first.
The bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first was the only run scored by the Sun Devils. Andreana then settled down and threw a complete game three-hitter in the losing effort. She pitched six innings and gave up the one earned run on three hits. She walked six Arizona State batters, three coming in the first inning. She falls to 5-10 on the season.
Arizona State threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the second on a deep fly ball over the centerfield fence but Cavestany went up, reached her glove over the wall and robbed the would-be two-run home run. She then threw the ball back to first base attempting to double-off the runner at first. The ball got away from the first baseman but catcher Ally Kutz was there to back up the play and throw out the runner at second trying to advance to end the inning.
Cavestany recorded another inning ending catch on a fly ball to deep right centerfield to end the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Beavers threatened to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning when Erin Guzy extended her hitting streak to a career-high four games, tying a streak earlier in the season, with a single to left field. She was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt but did not get past second. Guzy ended the game 1-for-3.
Sun Devils' starting pitcher Dallas Escobedo improves to 22-3 with the win.
The Beavers and Sun Devils will face off again tomorrow with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. PT.
