TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State women's golf team improved its second round by 15 shots and moved up six spots to 10th place on Saturday at the 37th Annual PING/ASU Invitational.
The Beavers shot a 4-over 292 in the second round, the sixth best round of the day among the 17-team field, after posting a 19-over 307 in the opening round at the par-72, 6,230-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course to move up from 16th place to 10th.
"Today we had an excellent first 14 holes," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Then we closed with some poor play having to count two double-bogeys in our last few holes. As a team we are making good progress with our scoring and our mental toughness goals. Today's round just shows what they are capable of in terms of scoring. They are beginning to realize they are good, which is a huge step in building the confidence and culture of this team."
Every Oregon State golfer bettered or equaled their opening round led by freshman Lauren Sewell, who fired a 3-under 69 in the second round to improve by 10 strokes from her first round and sits in a tie for 35th with a 4-over 79-69--148.
"Lauren was steady all day and had great mental awareness and execution," Alexander said. "She has been striking the ball well for weeks and we knew it was only a matter of time before she put this together."
Freshman Seshia Telles is also tied for 35th with a 4-over 75-73--148, junior Whitney French is at 7-over 77-74--151, sophomore Rachael Fischer is at 8-over 76-76--152 and sophomore Chelsey Lind knocked seven strokes off her first round and is at 19-over 85-78--163.
UCLA and USC are tied for the lead at 11-under and Stephanie Kono of UCLA and Madison Pressel of Texas are tied for the individual lead at 5-under.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
