TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State women's golf team shot a 21-over 309 in the opening round of the 2011 Pac-10 Championships on Sunday and sits in ninth place after the first day of competition at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
"We started off poorly and finished strong," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "We still have to learn from our mistakes and show some mental toughness. Lauren played a great round from tee to green and just missed some birdie opportunities. Seshia had a solid round with the exception of two holes. We can catch some people tomorrow if they commit to their game plan."
The Beavers got solid rounds from their freshmen tandem of Lauren Sewell and Seshia Telles, who shot a 3-over 75 and 4-over 76, respectively, at the par-72, 6,230-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course. Sewell is tied for 25th and Telles is tied for 27th. Junior Whitney French fired a 6-over 78 for a tie for 37th and sophomore Chelsey Lind had an 8-over 80 to round out Oregon State's first day team total.
"I think that I played pretty steady," Sewell said. "Today it was in the mid-90's, which is the kind of weather that I prefer to play in. So it was very important to stay hydrated throughout the day."
"I thought I played really well today," Telles said. "I had two holes that messed my game up pretty bad and had two balls in the water. For my second round tomorrow, my game plan is to go all out and attack the course and also play smart."
USC and Stanford are tied for the team lead after posting a 6-under 282 and Tiffany Lua of UCLA is the clubhouse leader after day one with a 4-under 68.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. on Monday and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
