CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Dunn doubled, homered and drove in three to lead the No. 19 Oregon State baseball team to a series sweep of No. 5 Arizona State with a 9-6 win in front of 2,475 fans Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
The series sweep is the Beavers first-ever over Arizona State in Corvallis and the club's first over the Sun Devils since 1966.
It also marked the first time the Sun Devils have been swept in a Pacific-10 Conference series since 1999.
"This was a balanced win and weekend over one of the top teams in the country," said Oregon State head coach Pat Casey, who won his 561st game as the Beavers' head coach, tying Ralph Coleman for second-most. "Our offense battled back after they took a couple early leads and we got some great relief outings from James (Nygren), Tony (Bryant) and Matt (Boyd). Everyone did their part to win this series."
Dunn homered in the second and drove in two with a double in the third. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and tallied a 6-for-11 weekend against the Sun Devils, posting three doubles, a home run and six RBI.
Carter Bell led the Beavers with a 3-for-4 day, while Ryan Barnes and Tyler Smith matched Dunn with two hits of their own.
The clubs both tallied 11 hits, and the Beavers finished the weekend with 35 for a .350 overall batting average. The team's No. 6-9 batters went 22-for-42 (.523) over the three games, finishing with 12 RBI and 15 runs scored.
Nygren earned the win after going four innings in relief of OSU starter Ben Wetzler, who lasted just 1/3 of an inning. Nygren allowed six hits and four runs while striking out six. He improved to 5-1 this season.
Bryant relieved Nygren in the fifth and worked 3 1/3 solid innings, allowing three hits and a run with one strikeout before being relieved by Boyd in the eighth. The lefty threw a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for his third save of the 2011 season.
ASU got on the board first for the third time in the series, leading 1-0 after the top half of the first. But the Beavers answered back with two runs in the bottom half; Kavin Keyes, who later extended his hit streak to 11 games, drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly then watched as Bell drove in Danny Hayes with a single.
Riccio Torrez gave the Sun Devils the lead again in the second on a three-run double, but that lasted shortly as Dunn homered to lead off the second and Smith, who had singled, eventually scored on a balk by ASU starter Jake Barrett.
The seesaw battle extended through the third as Deven Marrero posted a solo shot off Nygren.
But yet again, the Beavers answered, scoring three in the third. Dunn drove in the first two runs of the inning with a double to the left center gap, and scored himself on a sac fly by Smith.
The Beavers added cushion with solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings and held on after the Sun Devils scored one in the eighth.
Barrett took the loss for Arizona State, dropping to 3-3 on the year. The righty allowed six hits and seven runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
The win pushed Oregon State to its sixth consecutive win as the Beavers improved to 24-7 overall and 5-1 in Pac-10 play.
Arizona State, meanwhile, dropped to 22-9 and 5-4 in league play.
Oregon State hits the road next weekend when it visits Stanford for a three-game series at Sunken Diamond. It opens Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
