The Oregon State men's rowing team raced well in its first showing of the season at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta. OSU's Junior Varsity 8 and Varsity 4+ each earned victories against some of the best crews in Canada.
"The first race of 2011 is over and we came away knowing what we need to work on," head coach Steve Todd said of the weekend's races.
On Sunday, the V4+ pulled off the victory in an epic three-boat battle with OSU's JV4+ and Victoria's top four-man crew. The lead changed four times before the Beavers V4+ pulled away to a 1.5-second win over UVic and the Beavers' second boat crossed the finish just a half-second behind for third.
The Varsity 8 race featured gusty conditions and the Beavers stayed ahead of the Vikes most of the way and moved through British Columbia. But in the final 250 meters Victoria handled the race conditions better to edge out the Beavers for second behind the Victoria Training Centre, which is made up of Canada's national team.
In Saturday's racing, the JV8 crew earned the win using the middle of the course to pull away from the Vikes near the 1,000-meter mark to win by 12 seconds.
"The JV boat had a very solid weekend start to finish," said Todd. "It was great for them to get a win in the 8+ and then to turn around and race a tight race in the 4's on Sunday."
The Beavers' return to action March 20 against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
