Softball Splits Second Day at DeMarini Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - For the second straight day the Oregon State softball team split its day-night double-header. The Beavers defeated the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss 1-0 in nine innings in the first game but fell to Northwestern in the night game by a final score of 3-2. The Beavers are now 7-6 on the season.
Game 1 vs. Southern Miss
Desiree Beltran drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Beavers a walk-off win in their first extra inning game of the season.
Oregon State starting pitcher Marina Demore was perfect through four innings before giving a walk to leadoff the fifth inning. She held on to the no-hitter before losing it with two outs in the top of the seventh inning on a double to right.
The seven innings of regulation came and went and it was still a scoreless tie forcing the Beavers into their first extra innings game of the 2011 campaign.
Due to NCAA extra inning rules, a runner was placed on second base for the Golden Eagles to start the eighth inning but they could not get anything going.
Oregon State started a runner on second and was immediately moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning but two consecutive strikeouts ended their chances.
The Golden Eagles could not score in the top of the ninth inning. Kilee Lippencott pinch ran for the Beavers and was placed at second base to start the ninth inning. After a strikeout and an infield popup to third base, Beltran lined the ball through the left side which drove in Lippencott from second base to score the game winning run.
Demore pitched nine complete innings in a two hit shutout. She struck out four and walked only one improving her record to 5-3 on the season. Southern Miss starter went 8 2/3 innings and fell to 3-5.
Game 2 vs. Northwestern
Oregon State met the Northwestern Wildcats for the second time in two weeks in the second game of the day Saturday. The Beavers fell to the Wildcats by a final score of 3-2 that went down to the final at bat for Oregon State.
Lea Cavestany led off the game for the Beavers in the bottom half of the first inning with a long drive to deep center field which was tracked down by the Northwestern centerfielder.
The Wildcats scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a solo home run. They added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Oregon State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs. Cavestany led off the inning with a double to left center and was moved to third on a pinch hit groundout by Lowe. Guzy then singled to center scoring Cavestany for the Beavers' first run of the game.
Hall reached on a fielder's choice when the short stop tried to throw out Guzy going to second but the second baseman could not hold on to the ball. Mary Claire Brenner singled to left field to load the bases bringing up Audrey Roderfeld. Roderfeld drove the ball to deep left field but was tracked down for the second out of the inning. Guzy tagged up at third base and scored before Isabelle Batayola was thrown out at third base trying to advance. Northwestern held the 3-2 lead going into the final inning.
After Northwestern failed to score again in the top of the seventh inning, Oregon State went in order to fall to Northwestern 3-2.
Paige Hall started the game for Oregon State and went five innings giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out six batters. She fell to 1-2 on the season.
