Softball Shuts Out Aggies and Gaels to Continue Winning Streak

DAVIS, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team swept its fourth straight doubleheader and its ninth straight overall when Lea Cavestany drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon to win 1-0 at the Aggie Stampede in Davis, Calif. The Beavers defeated UC Davis 1-0 earlier in the day.
The nine game winning streak ties the longest winning streak for the Beavers since 2008. During the winning streak the Beavers have given up a total of six earned runs in 62 innings pitched for a team earned run average of 0.68. The pitching staff has combined for 63 strikeouts in the 62 innings. They have not allowed a run, earned or otherwise, in the last 23 innings. The team is hitting .266 while hold their opponents to a .178 batting average.
Game 1 - Oregon State 1, UC Davis 0
After being rained out for three consecutive days, the Beavers began play at the Aggie Stampede in Davis, Calif. Sunday morning with an 8:30 a.m. matchup with host team UC Davis.
Oregon State (16-8 overall) pitchers Marina Demore and Paige Hall combined for a three hit shutout of the Aggies with Hall getting the win and improving to 5-2 on the season.
Oregon State got two runners on base, both coming off of walks, but strands the runners on first and second in the top half of the first inning.
After the Aggies (12-12) loaded the bases in the second inning with three walks but Oregon State starting pitcher Demore got her second strikeout of the game to end the threat in the bottom of the second. Demore went 3.1 innings pitched allowed one hit and struck out three while walking four.
UC Davis' leadoff hitter in the bottom of the third reached on a walk and was then thrown out at second on a fielder's choice. The Beavers shut down the Aggies in the fifth on a strike out, throw out double play getting the runner at second trying to steal.
The Beavers scored the lone run of the game in the top half of the fourth inning. Beltran singled up the middle with one out and was then pinch ran for by Isabelle Batayola. After Batayola stole second, Kutz singled through the left side moving Batayola to third and advancing to second on a throw to the plate. Lowe ran for Kutz at second before Nikki Chandler hit a sacrifice foul fly ball to left field scoring Batayola from third.
The Aggies threatened in the late innings, getting runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings, but could not get a run across. Hall came in to pitch with one out in the fourth inning and allowed only two hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Beltran, Kutz and Chandler combined for the only three hits for the Beavers in the game with Chandler driving in the game-winning run in the top of the fourth inning.
UC Davis starting pitcher Alex Holmes fell to 7-9 with the loss.
Game 2 - Oregon State 1, Saint Mary's 0
The Gales' leadoff hitter Kayla Gonzalez singled up the middle to start the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved Gonzalez to second, she tried to advance to third on a wild pitch by Oregon State starter Tina Andreana but was thrown out at third for the second out and killing the Gaels' threat in the first.
Andreana would give up two hits and a walk in the first 1.1 innings before striking out six out of the next seven batters. She would pitch five complete innings allowing five hits while striking out seven and allowing only one walk and no earned runs.
The Gales (4-10) threatened to put a run on the board in the fifth inning when they got a runner on second with two outs. Michelle Mounts tried to score from second base on a base hit to center but Cavestany gunned her down at the plate on a beautiful one-hop to Kutz the third out ending the threat. They would threaten again in the sixth but would not be able to score.
Guzy and Hall walked in the getting two runners on in the first inning. The Beavers would not get more than one runner on base in an inning again until the seventh.
Oregon State scattered three hits in the first six innings before they were able to finally put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. Emily Richardson, who came in as a defensive replacement at second base in to start the fourth inning, led off the seventh with a base hit to left field for her second hit of the game. Richardson then moved to second when McKenna Lowe walked with one out. Cavestany then came up and drilled a double off the fence in right center field driving Richardson in from second for the game-winning run.
Hall pitched the final two innings for the Beavers and allowed no hits while striking out one and walking one. She picked up both wins on the day which improves her record to 6-2 on the season. Saint Mary's starter Jessica Lemmon fell to 0-3 with the loss.
Richardson would end the game going 2-for-2 along with scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
