The fifth-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team knocked off No. 6 Utah 196.600-196.325 on Senior Night at Gill Coliseum Saturday evening. The win over Utah is the third over a top 10 team in the last four weeks following last week's victory over then-No. 2 Stanford and the Feb. 11 win over then-No. 10 UCLA. It was the final regular season home meet for seniors Becky Colvin and Jen Kesler.
Oregon State improved its record to 17-5, while Utah falls to 7-3. The win marks the first over the Utes since 2003.
"We didn't have our best meet but it was great to see this team keep working," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "They really stuck with it and overcame a few challenges and trusted their skills. This is a great win for this team, their confidence is really high right now and they're doing some really wonderful gymnastics."
Oregon State opened the meet with a solid vault rotation, tallying a team total of 49.100. Stephanie McGregor and Leslie Mak opened with scores of 9.775. Makayla Stambaugh followed with a big vault and small hop to score 9.85. Kelsi Blalock struggled to control her landing to score 9.775 and Becky Colvin added a 9.80. Britney Ranzy finished the rotation with a huge vault and nailed her landing to score 9.90.
Despite trailing 49.325-49.100, the Beavers were undaunted and charged back into the mix in the second stanza. McGregor continued her hot spell on the bars leading off with a 9.825 to set the tone for a lineup ranked No. 1 in the nation. Brittany Harris and Jen Kesler followed with back-to-back 9.80's. Stambaugh added a beautiful routine to score 9.875. Mak was next but suffered her first fall of the season after hitting the first 37 routines of 2011. Olivia Vivian, who is tied for No. 1 in the nation, came right back to finish the rotation with a 9.875 giving the Beavers a team score of 49.175. The Beavers' bars performance closed the gap on the Utes to 98.325-98.275.
OSU continued to gather momentum on the balance beam with Melanie Jones leading off by tying her career-high with a 9.85. Blalock and Harris added scores of 9.75 and 9.80 respectively leading to a terrific routine for Vivian and a career-high of 9.875. In the anchor position, Mak bounced back with an outstanding performance and a career-best tying 9.925.
Heading into the final rotation the Beavers had the lead for the first time at 147.475-147.325. A solid six-for-six performance on the floor, and an electric crowd of 3,728, sealed the deal for the Orange & Black. Blalock and Harris started things with back-to-back 9.80's and Mak scored 9.825. Jones and Stambaugh performed beautiful routines to earn a pair of 9.85's and Ranzy finished the meet with a 9.75.
Oregon State is back in action next Saturday, March 19, at the Pac-10 Championships at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. The conference championship meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum Saturday, April 2, to host the NCAA Regional Championships at 4 p.m.
