The No. 5 Oregon State gymnastics team took care of business hitting all 24 routines and a season-high score of 197.200 en route to winning the final Pac-10 Championship meet Saturday afternoon at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. Leslie Mak earned three individual conference titles scoring a career-high in the all-around with a 39.525 and a career-best on the balance beam with a 9.95. Olivia Vivian and Makayla Stambaugh along with Mak tied for the Pac-10 on the uneven bars.
“I'm really proud of the way this team performed tonight,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “They had to overcome changes to the lineup and met the way they met the challenge was incredible. I'm so proud. This is great momentum as we head into the NCAA Championship season.”
For OSU the conference title is its first since 1996 and fifth overall and is the first under Chaplin. On the way to the title, the Beavers posted the top team scores on bars, beam and floor and tied for the top score on vault.
“Oregon State was the best team in the house tonight,” said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. “I can handle losing a meet as long as we don't lose it. We did really well. We got beat by a better team tonight.”
OSU opened the meet on a bye but came out for the second rotation loose and ready to compete. The Beavers' vault squad tallied a season-high tying 49.300 to take the early lead and never relented in their quest for the championship title. A career-high 9.90 by Blalock and a matching score from Britney Ranzy were good enough to tie for second in the seven team meet. Becky Colvin vaulted to a 9.85 and Stambaugh and Mak added scores of 9.825.
After a second bye, the Beavers returned to the floor determined to keep the pressure on fellow top 10 teams Stanford and UCLA. Moving to their best event, the uneven bars, where OSU is ranked No. 1 in the nation, the Beavers just missed another season-high with an outstanding performance including six stuck landings and a team score of 49.425. Olivia Vivian, who is tied for No. 1 in the country on the event, Stambaugh and Mak each tallied scores of 9.90 to tie with three other competitors for the event title. Jen Kesler and Stephanie McGregor added scores of 9.875 and 9.85 respectively and Blalock, competing on the bars for the first time in her career, scored 9.80.
The Beavers were unrelenting as they moved to the balance beam and the scores kept coming. Mak, who was the runner-up on the beam last year, posted a career-best 9.95 to win the Pac-10 title. The entire lineup set up Mak for the win with career-best performances from Vivian and Blalock at 9.90 and 9.85 respectively. Kesler tossed in a 9.85 and Stambaugh and Melanie Jones tallied scores of 9.80.
Following its final bye, Oregon State moved to the floor holding a six-tenth lead over UCLA. Blalock scored 9.75 to start the rotation and Vivian followed with a 9.80, Mak scored 9.85 and Jones came next with a 9.775. Stambaugh performed a beautiful routine and fought through music problems to score a 9.875 and seal the win for the Beavers. Ranzy finished the scoring for OSU with a 9.825 and gave the team a score of 49.125 on the event.
