SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Oregon State women's golf team concluded its first round at the 2nd Annual Bruin Wave Invitational with a 33-over 321 on Monday.
The Beavers sit in 15th place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament that is being played at the par-72, 6,282-yard Valley Course at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club. The tournament is co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine.
"The truth is that the women are not playing to the level of their physical talent and they have the tools that have been given tremendous opportunities," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "When they decide to trust in themselves and believe in themselves, they will fulfill their level of potential."
Sophomore Rachael Fischer, who is competing in her second career tournament for Oregon State, led the Beavers with a 5-over 77 and sits in a tie for 36th individually. Freshman Seshia Telles fired a 6-over 78 and is tied for 45th, while junior Whitney French is tied for 57th after shooting an opening-round 8-over 80.
"Rachael had a good day even with a triple-bogey on the sixth hole," Alexander said. "She was very steady and her short game was excellent. Seshia also played very well with the exception of a triple on the 13th hole. I believe their positive attitudes helped them to stay in the present."
UCLA was the lone team in the field to shoot an under-par round and leads with a 7-under 281. Arizona sits in second with a 4-over 292, San Diego State is second at 7-over 295 and Pepperdine rounds out the top four with an 8-over 296.
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and live scoring throughout the tournament will be available at www.golfstat.com.
